A KILTMAKER to the stars is to sell his historic Lothians castle – ending his dream of making it his company's global headquarters.
Geoffrey Nicholsby bought Duntarvie Castle in West Lothian nearly 18 years ago. He initially wanted to transform it into a five-star hotel, but later set about making it a retreat for celebrities to fly in and get kilted out.

But despite winning
a lengthy fight to get planning and ancient monument consent, the 61-year-old has given up on his ambitions and instead put the remains of the castle, on the Hopetoun Estate near Winchburgh, up for sale.

With planning consent already in place for it to become a corporate headquarters – complete with its own retail, guest accommodation and helipad – selling agents expect it to be snapped up by an international firm looking to create a global HQ.

Although a complete refurbishment of the eight-acre site is needed, the castle is expected to generate seven-figure bids.

Mr Nicholsby, who now operates his headquarters from his shop at Castlehill, said he was not willing to go ahead with his plans because the five-year battle to win consent had taken too long.

He said: "The problem is it has all gone on for so long. I'm 61 now and I don't need all the hassle of starting to rebuild it. It's a bit sad but life goes on. I feel I need a bit more time off now."

Mr Nicholsby's business, Geoffrey (Tailor) Kiltmakers, which counts Robbie Williams and Sean Connery as customers, was to move its headquarters from above its shop in the High Street.

A plan to refurbish the site was initially lodged in 2003 and it was intended that visitors would be offered a discreet shopping and fitting service with an offer to stay the night in the lap of luxury.

The plans were approved by West Lothian Council but thrown out at a public inquiry. That decision was reversed, only for it to fail to achieve ancient monument consent from Historic Scotland.

Despite the consent finally being given at Christmas, Mr Nicholsby has already moved the HQ to Castlehill. He said: "It will suit someone who wants a really big headquarters. It would be like a smaller Royal Bank.

"It is a really nice, modern office that you could create within the castle. There's got to be interest. It won't just lie there."

Although no asking price has been set, Mr Nicholsby is hopeful it could attract seven figures.

Andrew Smith, who is handling the sale for agent Strutt & Parker, said: "It is extremely rare to find an historic castle this close to Edinburgh, and with full planning permission, on the open market."

heaven forbid tat takes over. They should be marched out of city never to be seen again.

We want to keep our scottish heritage not imported fakes and rubbish purporting to be scottish

I doubt if anyone in their right mind would risk living that close to Winchburgh. Winchburgh seems to be crawling with neds and there are clear signs of some in-breeding.
My scullery maid hails from Winchburgh and she once told me that many in the wretched place like nothing better than a night out in .... Broxburn. My case rests.

#5 not very nice.

Nasty men are the Gold Brothers etc who have brought tat and rubbish here and conning tourists of alot of money.

Certainly hope someone will make use of it and it becomes a pride of scotland and not somepeople like goldbrothers who may live here but have no scruples whatsover as long as they get a sale.

Anyone who sells anything cheap and plentiful makes a lot of money. Doesn't matter if it is Gold Brothers or McDonalds. And all things that were expensive in the past are now cheap or cheaper be it cars, phones, sat navs. Anybody who sells anything cheap is not conning but simply satisfying a demand. Get real you mourners. This is only business cycle.

Free advertising again for this guy, he was on television years ago on house doctor, because he could not sell his house,by the way his house had carpet on the walls as well as the floors, but the real reason he could not sell his house was it was far too expensive, the same goes for this so called castle, he expects some mug to come along and pay him a fortune, why does he need headquarters, does he not just have a couple of shops. Post 7, you are totally wrong about Gold Bros., they are a very clever, hard working family, all the shops they are in would be lying boarded up, empty if they were not in them, Ionly wish my business was half as good as theirs.Nobody forces anyone to go into Gold Bros, if you think there is a market, go on try, I did and failed.

#9 that depends if all above board!! I suspect many not with 2 sets of books if you deal only in cash!!

The tat shops are cheap and are a con on the whole to tourists. They think they are genuine scottish shops telling of our heritage.

Get real in business you can be either ethical or non ethical I prefer the former!!

# disagree totally! Yes they opened shops that were boarded up but got reduced rates etc etc!! If you call them shops well the definition of one has changed. I expect clean well layed out shops with good customer service not what is on offer from tat shops regardless of who owns them.

So off with them to Ingliston or Barrowland and good luck to Geoffrey in selling to a reputable person.

I have to say that having met geoff he really is a vile man. Most unhelpful, left me in the lurch with a promise weeks before my wedding.

I don't have much time for the Singhs/Golds but i have even less for this man. Even if his kit is the real deal.

Even worse he seems to believe that his kilts are a special breed. When really the only special kilt that you will get has been handmade and crafted by a genuine kiltmaker, someeone who does it out of love and heritage not money.

#16 - what rubbish you write if you can call that writing!

#15 agree proper kilts are made with pride and quality. If i needed a new kilt I'd go to Wick as there's a guy there down at the harbour who does it as a labour of love and pride as well as for a living. Good value as I found out at a friends wedding. No comparison for quality.

I wonder what gold bros would say if we set up sari shops all made in Scotland! Ha they would have a fit!
