What's planned for St Andrew's Day? Nothing, says Holyrood

IT HAS been billed as a celebration of "Scottishness" and a potential rival for the St Patrick's Day festivities across the world.
But the Scottish Government has been left red-faced after it emerged its website was still promoting last year's St Andrew's Day celebrations.

Despite awarding its staff an extra day's holiday earlier this year, the government has still not announ
ced what events it is staging across the country.

VisitScotland's website includes just a handful of St Andrew's Day events, including a performance of Mother Goose in Kilmarnock. It is ignoring several major events taking place around Scotland.

Alex Salmond, the First Minister, has previously vowed to make St Andrew's Day, on 30 November, a global celebration and said he wanted it to kickstart "winter festival" celebrations across the country.

But details of events being staged to celebrate Scotland's patron saint are almost impossible to find. The www.scotland.org site – billed as the "official online gateway" to the country – has an extensive list of events, all of which are 12 months out of date.

The Scottish Government told The Scotsman it was still finalising a programme of events and insisted an announcement was due within the next few days.

A spokeswoman said: "The programme for St Andrew's Day will build on previous years. We are not going to publicise events on the website until a programme is finalised and officially launched."

A spokeswoman for Visit Scotland said: "We will work with the government to ensure we get the message to as many visitors and potential visitors as possible. This will still provide people with plenty of time to plan attendance at events.

"We have already been promoting St Andrew's Day through a range of PR and marketing activity around the world."

However, Ted Brocklebank, the Scottish Tories' culture spokesman, said: "This is the final St Andrew's Day before the Year of Homecoming, with events scheduled to run from Burns Night in January all the way to St Andrew's Day next November.

"We would have expected a more co-ordinated and efficient promotion effort from the Scottish Government. In my home town of St Andrews, our annual St Andrew's Day festival is up and running, and has been well publicised. Perhaps the Scottish Government could take a leaf out of that book, rather than standing idly by."

Simon Thoumire, founder of the Scottish Traditional Music Awards, who launched a campaign to promote St Andrew's Day events several years ago, said: "I'm unaware of anything the government is doing for St Andrew's Day.

"It does seem odd that there's out-of-date information on the website, and this year's programme has still not been announced. It should be promoted months in advance."

Och, they're just teasing us. They will have a live performance of The White Heather Club On Ice announced just in time. But you know, we really do not need Alex Salmond's permission to celebrate St Andrew's Day.

If you're going to be in Glasgow on Saturday 29 November, join the STUC St Andrew’s Day Anti Racism March and Rally.

The March assembles at 10.30am at St Andrew’s in the Square, off Saltmarket. We march off at 11.00am, to a rally at 12 noon at the Glasgow Film Theatre in Rose Street.

Re #2 : "If you're going to be in Glasgow on Saturday 29 November, join the STUC St Andrew’s Day Anti Racism March and Rally."

Since it's being held on the eve of St Andrew's Day, presumably the main theme will be anti-Scottish racism?

The Scottish government has its hands full trying to stem the effects of a global financial meltdown in Scotland while at the same time trying to fight of the aggressive attempts by the UK government to undermine Scotlands financial institutions even further and this piece of sh*t rag hounds them over their lack of efforts in organising a festival when folk are worried sick about their financial futures.
How very very unionist and British of them.

VisitScotland staff need to be thrown out. They have always been a waste of space and money!

The first thing you do to advertise anything these days is to get it on the INTERNET! Posters, adverts and mailing list are secondary! Because there's more people switched on to the Internet than ever now.

Given that we have entered a downward vortex of the most visious and still un-controlled recession in decades...we stand in serious danger of being accused of 'fiddling while Rome burns' were we to expend pubic funds on formal celebrations of Scotland's patron saint.

I have deep and humble joy at being born a Scot - I love my native land (with all it's many faults and failings... but in a time such as this - let those who wish - celebrate...but let THEM PAY THE PIPER!

#9 I agree whole heartedly. In Switzerland there are a few organised firework shows but everyone buys their own fireworks and organises their own parties on 1st August (Swiss National Day)They celebrate the way they want to. Why should everything be paid for by the government? This is rediculous.

30th November 2008 is a Sunday! Question answered!

20 Bluevoice) I quite agree, "Fete Nationale" in Montreux, Switzerland on 1st August every year, no matter upon what day it falls, is a celebration par excellence!!

When will the scottish realise that they cant continue independant from england, if they secceed frim the British nation they forgoe any right to funding, which currently keeps them afloat and with free education and NHS, and any right to the north sea oil platforms. If Scotland relies in the ideologue that if they become independant, europe will help, and the north sea oil revenue will be theirs, they are saddly mistaken and woefully ignorant.
Happy St andrews day.
wake up and smell the haggis.

By the way, in the words of Midge Ure, "this means nothing to meeeee", maybe hell add "ohhhhh scotland"?

Get a grip!?

:)
