FORMER Liverpool captain and manager Graeme Souness has tipped Michael Owen to rebuild his career after sealing a surprise move to English champions Manchester United.
Souness brought Owen to Newcastle United for £17million four years ago, but the move turned sour for the England striker following a succession of injuries and the club's relegation last season.

Owen's stock in the game has never been lower and he
has been frozen out of the England squad under Fabio Capello despite an impressive strike rate of 40 goals in 89 international appearances.

While doubts persists over the 29-year-old's fitness and the wisdom of the deal done by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Souness believes his fellow Scot has pulled a masterstroke.

"I don't think Michael is shot. It's a really good transfer for all concerned," said Souness. "I think the move will excite him and give him a whole new lease of life.

"He was Newcastle's top player at the time and all of that onus was on him. At United he will be just another player and surrounded by really good team-mates who can give him the service he needs. He will also be in the best environment in terms of treatment off the field and that is important to any player of his age."

Commenting on Ferguson's gamble, he added: "I think this is a smart deal for him. It's a clever one especially when there are not too many available targets. In fact, this could easily be the deal of the season if it works out."

If he can stay fit, could be a good signing, he certainly will get bags of service from midfield, and will also have quality help up front. Could be the next great supersub.

Seems a good deal to Man U given the money they are spending is next to nothing for them. There is a risk that Owen may not play too often if his injury problems persist, but i think the potential upside far outweighs that. Pretty shrewd move from Ferguson if you ask me.

Go to the rumour section story if you wish to comment on the WS Ibrox players for sale story. Thread is open.

Much the same story we heard in January.

You asked the question @ post 5. That's the reason for the reply at post 16.

Time for you to lighten up, or have you always had a pin stuck up your a*se?

You believe TM was the # one choice for the tic job, I happen to have a different opinion, get over it.

Let the CL qualifiers begin.

"I have explained to you why your opinion is crock"

But your opinions are all fact. lol

If TM was in fact as you say CFC only choice, why did the powers at be at Parkhead seek permission from Swansea to speak to Martinez?

If TM was the only choice for the managers job at CFC why did your owner phone McGhee telling him he was not in the frame for the tic job, only then did McGhee sign with the Dons.

Had TM been the only choice wanted at Parkhead why bother talking to others.

I expect your standard answer it is part of the recruitment process!!

I can accept your views on this subject, I have mine, neither one of us are privy to what really happened and all we can do is form our own opinions, we should just agree to disagree on this and many other things.

"What we do know is that Coyle and Martinez did not sign contracts until after TM was appointed Celtic manager"

Coyle was reported to be on holiday for 2 weeks after winning promotion.

Martinez was in negotiations with Wigan for their job, (after refusing to entertain the tic) which took about the same length of time to conclude as TM moving to CFC, due to compensation for the previous clubs, length and salary at the new club for the boss, etc.

"They need to spend in excess of £10/15M on 5 or 6 players if they want to put a serious challenge in on the Champions" Poor deluded fool

How do you know that Coyle or Martinez were never offered the tic job?

Manager Smith has warned however that there will be no "big name buys" adding: " We already know we have a team that can be successful so we don't need to spend millions."'

No new super stars like Kyle and Kenny then

How come nearly every football story ends up a "discussion" about Rangers and Celtic?

Well, Michael Owen is only 29 so this is yet another shrewd move by the Fergie cos all Michael Owen needs is to get back his confidence after some injuries and an ultimately failed relegation struggle dented it severely.
