AS the place where the rules of golf were first written down, it lays claim to being the birthplace of the sport.
But with the exception of an annual four-day festival, a club has rarely been swung on Leith Links for well over a century.

All that could be set to change as part of plans to regenerate the area and improve the popular park.

The city council is to consider proposals for a nine-hole pitch and putt course on the east of the Links.

A statue of John Rattray - the founding member of the club which first recorded the rules - would also be installed near the starting tee as part of the plans.

Pat Denzler, secretary of the Leith Rules Golf Society (LRGS), which promotes Leith's place in the history of the game, said a new course would be an ideal way of promoting the history of the Links and the famous game played there in 1744.

"It's a very under-celebrated fact that the first recorded game of a now worldwide sport took place in Leith," she said.

"It would be great if we could have something permanent, not only to remember that fact by, but for people to play there now.

"I think it would be a popular facility. Many people don't have any idea about the history and this would be one good way of raising that profile."

Golf is currently banned on the Links for the safety of other users of the park. The LRGS has to obtain special permission to hold the annual Hickory Open, in which participants dress in historic golfing clothes and play a temporary course with hickory clubs.

A five-hole course was created on the Links for the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith, who in 1744 became the first to make a written record of the rules of the game.

They included instructions to play each shot honestly and not aim at a competitor's ball, that player whose ball lies furthest from the hole plays first, and that objects such as sticks and leaves should not be removed unless on the green.

Margaret Moffett, secretary of Leith Links Community Council, agreed with the proposal but questioned whether East Links was the best location, preferring another site beside John's Place.

She said: "The community council has been going on about bringing in something like this for years.

"There used to be a pitch and putt at John's Place and that was tremendously popular at the time.

"There are a lot of good things happening in Leith just now, and this could be another."

Do you get a free drop your ball if it hits a jakey, or is it stroke and distance?

This scheme seems to me, to be a grab for the best piece of open play land in Leith. Come on Leithers dont be fooled by all the mumbo jumbo being spouted about historical events. Rise up and defend your birthright. Margaret Muffet you should be ashamed of yourself aiding and abetting this grab for our beloved Leith Links. Of course, the pitch and putt area would have to be fenced of and I suppose there would be a need for a car parking reserve? Oh and an entrepreneur would have to be found to build and pay for all the design and erection of the club house and golf course itself. This person would have to have an extended lease to recover his/her major outlay. There would be no financial gain for Leith's inhabitants, in fact I can envision a loss not only in open public space but to the ratepayers. Leithers dont let this happen

While I am always a fan of community regeneration, surely this part of Leith doesn't need regenerating?! There is a very successful cricket club there that's just got funding for youth development, as well as kids football teams.

Leith Cricket Club loans their clubhouse and pavillion for a few days a year to the Leith Rules Golf brigade, and has to cancel their fixtures to do so. I presume if the 9 hole course is a permanent fixture, the cricket club, which has been there for over 150 years, would have to find another home?

Put this golf course somewhere that needs it! NOT on the Links!

What about the existing 11-a-side football pitch, areas for schools football and Leith Athletic Boys Club never mind Leith Franklin Academicals Cricket Club on the east side of the links?

Nonsense that nobody wants. Won't happen.

The "popular park" could be improved by enforcing bylaws making dog owners pick up the turds the beasts leave all over the links. Cutting the grass more often would be nice too. Oh, clear up the needles while your at it.

I think ye should get a free drop of one club length from the jakey, syringe or whitever.

There's no room for a pitch and putt. there's 2 cricket squares and 3 football pitches. The Leith Rules society only function with the aid of the cricket club as it is, this aid may be in jeopardy if they're planning something like this. We only just tolerate their limited event as it is.

I was born and brought up in Leith, walk the dog there most days (AND pick up after him!), and am very proud of the Port's links with the game of golf - but, as has already been pointed out, THERE IS JUST NO ROOM for this development! The current 4 day festival is quite adequate. (I believe that the course at Musselburgh is the oldest golf course STILL BEING PLAYED.)

As youth coordinator at Leith Franklin Acidemicals Beige Cricket Club, I was very worried to hear of the proposals made by the City Council to build this new course at the east end of Leith Links.

While golf goes back a long way at Leith Links, so do other sports including cricket and football. It is important to remember this heritage and accommodate all these sports that are such an integral part of Leiths culture.

The cricket club has just recieved a massive boost in funding and is now providing regular kids cricket sessions, which are attracting 20-30 children every week. My worry is that any impingement on our facilities would have a negative effect on a cricket club that is thriving once more.

a new golf course to be created on leith links but where will all the cider jakeys, heroin addicts and prossies who infest this area go?.

Pitch and putt? I think anything short of the original 5 hole layout would be a travesty.
Whilst it would necessitate the demolition of the old Leith Academy Secondary (now Queen Margaret's College?) in order to rebuild the first tee, the closure of Links Gardens at the point that it traverses the links would perhaps be good for the local area.
Also, with the planting of the wide variety of shrubbery and grasses that are now available to the golf course designer, I can envision a five star golfing facility that would have golfing aficionados flocking to from all over the world - for the chance to play on the oldest known golf course.
Lets make it a cracker and not let them down.
I recommend extensive bunkering around about the tight part of the course (around about where the cricket club is just now) to protect a smashing new multi-level green at the extreme east end (call the hole Mother Aitkens?)
Fabulous idea, but lets not scrimp and save on this project, but lets make it a five hole palatial golfing extravaganza as befitting of such a holy site.
Anything less would simply not work.

Scottish Golf History,

Leith is a very historic site for golf and would be open to tourists and others to play. Other club sports can be and are played elsewhere, on better surfaces and more safely than on Leith Links.

Bruntsfield Links manages to accomodate a 36 hole pitch&putt course with no safety issues reported.

Grateful though golfers are to the cricket and bowls clubs for the limited opportunities to play at Leith, the truth is the 'goufers' have more right than either of them to be there and should not have to be beholden to them for the privilege of playing their ain game in their ain country.

You're use of tourists is indeed enlightening. How exactly is this talked about development going to be "for the enjoyment of the people of Leith" as stated in the original deed granting the Links to the aforementioned people.

Play it once for novelty value, then watch tourists stroll about telling anyone who'll listen "how neat this is".

Where would you propose the footballers of Leith Athletic go, cricketers or for that matter anybody walking their dog or taking the kids to one of the few open green spaces left?

Stop living in the past and live in the present.

I believe there is room for ALL at Leith links! whether it be GOLF or Football!

The effort put in by the guys at Redpath and McLean Leith Franklin Beige Academicals to encourage youngsters to take up cricket, coupled with the coaches and committee at Leith Athletic in producing a long line of exceptional footballers could be dramatically undermined by this proposal. I would urge the people of Leith to oppose this ridiculous strongly.
