What a lot of nonesense. To move back to the original union flag would not take account of the St Patrick's cross incorporated after the Act of Union with Ireland in 1801.
Blue is the most represented colour in the Union Flag so I don't see why we should be bothered about the St George's cross being on top of the St Andrew's cross.
Some people have too much time on their hands, the only change that needs to be made at all is to incorporate Wales - no doubt there will be a project involving millions of pounds of our taxes to do this.......!
Will there ever be a day when Scottish Nationalists become outward looking instead of being engrossed in petty issues as it really works against the credibility of anything else they stand for.
Would this 'new' Union Jack include the St Patrick's Saltire on St Andrew's saltire or would that moved to the background with St George's cross?
Interesting comment at the end about the lack of union flags you see flying in Britain compared to other countries.
One of the first things I noticed when I moved to the USA was the large number of flags compared to Britain. It's not uncommon to see american flags flying in front of peoples homes and I don't remember that in Britain at all (though I'm sure some people do).
I don't think however that is due to americans being more patriotic or that being British isn't seen as being important as the article implies. It's just we have different ways of showing it.
I think Scotland should have their own flag. Blue background, white cross works well for me. Let it stand alone It and Scotland forever!
I believe it was the BBC that opened up the debate, rather than the nationalists, for a programme they are making. Perhaps the flags should just be separated and the Union Flag consigned to the dustbin of history.
Dear Sir/Madam: Who cares! This present United Kingdom is long past its sell-buy date. The U.K. is evolving into a loose con/federation of nations in everything but name. Much is made of the love for Old Glory in the U.S. but ask a Texican, Californian or Floridian which flag he loves first and it will always be the State flag. Yes, the Stars and Stripes is widely flown, but if you look carefully, normally alongside the State flag.
