Let us not omit Edinburgh's arms, and the challenge of the thistle - "Nemo me impune lacessit". No one assails me with impunity, or 'Wha' daur meddle wi' me'.
As a leith schoolboy I was charged to "Persevere", and as a scout, I undertook to "Be Prepared". Similarly as a Fraser of Lovat my crest informed my neighbours that "Je Suis Prest", I am ready or 'Aye Ready'.
could anyone inform me of the mcNaughton clan motto please .at the moment Iam bedridden docs orders.
2. Catherine in EdinburghSorry to hear about the malady that has you under doctors orders to remain in bed. Slainte math! The motto of Clan MacNaughton is "I hope in God."Wonderful motto, and I hope that He will heal whatever has you bedridden.
THANKYOU WILLIAM! you have made me feel a lot better and i will stik to my motto and hope too be up and about soon thankyou again!.
I'm not exactly sure what it means, but our MacDonald motto is By Land and By Sea! Does it mean we'll fight either way? Or we'll conquer everything? Or we'll spread our influence throughout the world (which we've done one way or another, I guess). Sounds impressive when we shout it out at games--either in English or Latin--but I'm not sure why.
Kathleen: I'm a MacDonald of the Isles. I always throught that "Per Terra Per Mare" was mostly in view of the Kingdom of the Isles - they were independent throughout much of Scotland's history, while aiding Scotland's kings (in particular Bruce). The MacDonalds had the largest Scottish fleet of "nyvegs" or birlinn boats (smaller, adapted versions of the Viking longboats). Clan Donald began with Somerled, who considered himself "Lord of the Isles" before this was an official title. So - we MacDonalds originated at Finlaggan, Isle of Islay, went everywhere by any means then possible, and you could almost call us the "SEALS" (or Special Services) of auld Scotland, though under to king but our own ruler. Regards from Dallas, Renate
I am a Gunn married to a McDonald,,so I guess that makes our personal family motto "Either Peace or War, By Land or by Sea"... name your posion,,we ae ready!

Well I am a Sutherland, several times removed, so Sans peur for me! 'Without Fear' Also very near to area is Stand Fast, Hold Tight and Hold on in various formats so I guess I should stand firm without fear! Fascinating subjectCatherine Get well soon.
Like everyone else I hope Catherine gets well soon. You have a very appropriate motto, Catherine! Clan mottos are brilliant - we laugh in our family at the combination of my wife's McNeill motto "Victory or Death" and my Scott motto - "I love"! Perhaps it says something about pirates and cattle duffers!Indeed a fascinating subject!
The Ewing motto is "Audacity", family history tells me that we are from the Stirling, Loch Lamond area. Do those two areas belong together? I also have McGavock, McNutt in my ancestoral line.
Well now, come to think of it that would be a family sentiment to inspire Mel Gibsen. He certainly had some audacity that night!
I am a Pict.Somebody tell me;what does that mean?
Royce 8Royce Good Morning we share the same name, and the same sentiment.
I am curious if anyone knows the family motto for McCollum(or McCallum) and the motto for McCombe. I am also McRae, but I know that motto is By Fortitude.
By direction of the Lord Lyon and since the accession of James MacArthur to the Chieftanship in 2003, the MacArthurs have been known as Clan Arthur. The motto "Fide et Opera" in usually translated as "By faith and work" (second chapter of James, versec 14 to 26)
Irving (Irvine) - sub sole sub umbra virens -
a better translation is
'Under the sun and in the shade we prosper'
what is the murray of athol family crest motto. i know on the coat of arms it is a mermaid combing her hair
To Billie in Georgia: Your family motto is Audaciter, an adverb meaning "boldly." You are a descendent of a group from Argyllshire whose larger group were named MacLaughlin (there are many spellings); they first were chased south to an area near Kilmarnock and then, in various stages at various times, to America, some via France. We are related, probably. Douglas C. Ewing
Info on Fraser clan.....connection McKimmie family from the Banff area north-east.
13. John - The Picts are a tribe of people in ancient Scotland that predated the Scots and their clan system. The picts were largly pushed out by or absorbed into the Scots people.
My clan, the Grants, have the ancient motto, "Stand Fast", the modern motto, "Craigelachie" (a mountain in ancient clan lands), and a battle cry of "Stand Fast, Craigelachie!". The ancient motto supposedly hails back to around 950 a.d. in Norway when King Haakon, the Viking predecessor of the Grants, was ambushed by his enemies and held them off until his supporters could rally to his defence, exhorting them to stand fast and not back down from the fight. In my own mind, the modern meaning of the motto is to stand up for what you believe and be prepared to defend it.
Thanks, Renate in Dallas--that gives me yet another possibility of what the motto means. As far as Murray of Athol, isn't that part of the general Murray clan--with the motto "tout pres" or "always ready." What I can't figure out is why some are in Latin, some in English, some in French, and some in Gaelic.
Well lets face it Mel...(gey me freedom fae the Jews) sure needs something to inspire him...apart fae a couple of blonds & a belly full of beer....
I thought the Irvine clan motto was: Dum memor ipse mei (obviously, misspelled), meaning "Whilst He himself is mindful of me". Any corrections or comments? Catherine, get well!
Suzanne - the motto of the McCallums, or McCollums is "In Ardua Tendit", translated as "They Strive After Great Things" or, in humor, "We'll try anything once." There is another, more ancient motto which is "Deus Refugium Nostrum" "We trust in God" that appears on the Chief's coat of arms.
As a proud descendant of ancient highland Gows and Giarns, as a modern Stirling Smith, I am proud to be a member of the Clan MacPherson. As I am 100% Scottish but live in the USA. As Smith, which has no clan since the 1600's but is of Clan MacPherson, I am still very proud of my family heritage and our sharing the Clan MacPherson motto!
I display the crest, motto, and flags of Scotland with great pride but I have no love of Mel Gibson though, as I feel he tainted the true blood of William Wallace, "The Giant" by portraying him as some Christ-like man. Shame on Mel, a man 5-10 playing a real man of over 6-foot 5-inches...even if it did make us Scots proud of our country once again and brought in tourist dollars to see the sword that stands taller than Mel, in more ways than height alone.

Those 'skairts' as in the illustration are awfu' short, och that's mebb where the Cutty Sark people got their idea frae :)
Out of curiosity please can anyone tell me if the surname Pritchard,Pritchett etc has any geneaological roots or ties in Scotland? The only Scottish connection that I know of is through my great grand-aunt Sarah Eliza Pritchard who married an Angus Campbell in New Zealand. He was from Scotland. I originally hail from the beautiful islands of Samoa and it is a long way in tracing my family roots. I have only seen two different crests...one with a black lion rampart and one like a shield with the words..."et le labourer"...with an arm and hammer(I think)design. Would appreciate feedback. Thanks a bunch!!
I am a member of the Gunn clan to which our motto is "War or Peace"... I to wish the lady with illness that i hope you get well soon and remember, God is ALWAYS in control!! Mel Gibson... I will not comment but I recently saw somethin on William Wallace that I had never seen and it was good. So... not all of Braveheart was Hollywood. I have one question off subject.... does anyone know where the last name ' Huckabay' originates? is it Celtic or gaelic? I can't find out anything and I've tried several sites. Thanks for your help.
John 13It means that your motto is "Many are called but few are Pict"
How about an article on slughorns (war cries)? Ours is Ard Choille! or High Wood and I'd dearly love to know why?

Douglas C. Ewing, Thank you, you are correct, I haven't looked at my genealogy material in awhile. My name is Billie Ewing, named after many Willam Ewings. The first William Ewing of my line came into this country before the revolutionary war and eventually settled in Rockilngham, Virginia. I've heard of this Mclaughlin connection before. Pardon if I mispelled that name. Thank you for the new information. There is a Clan Ewing of North America site on the net.Billie
I was vaguely aware of my family's Scottish heritage. I would tell my kids our family motto is: "A Hall Knows No Fear".

Realising it's a bit off clan motto topic here, but can someone please enlighten me about the claim of "stolen Scottish children" made by Sebastian? This is the first I've heard of this and I'm finding his posts a bit disturbing.
