Young (41)
ABERDEEN manager Jimmy Calderwood has continued his search for new players by handing a trial to former Falkirk defender Jean-Francois Lascinel.

The French-born Haiti international walked out on John Hughes' side after just nine appearances but wa
nts to return to the SPL now.

He was listed as trialist at Glebe Park but was one of the few who remained on the bench for the full 90 minutes of a match Aberdeen edged through Derek Young's solitary strike in the first half.

One positive for the visitors was that Charlie Mulgrew made an immediate impact on his first day as an Aberdeen player with a debut appearance to illustrate why the Pittodrie club were willing to pay Wolves £100,000 for his services.

The former Celtic full-back made a vital near-post block in 23 minutes to deny Calum Smith a goal that would have been deserved on the number of chances created by the Second Division side at that stage. He also showed his prowess at the other end of the field, curling a free-kick from the right edge of the penalty area on to the crossbar shortly after Jamie Smith had also struck the frame of the goal from a similar distance.

It was Young who finally claimed Aberdeen's goal 41 minutes into their fourth warm-up match as the midfielder hit a sweet left-foot shot from 25 yards that flew in off Chris McCluskey's left-hand upright.

Lee Miller could have doubled that advantage with a diving header early in the second period had it not been for a tremendous diving save by substitute goalkeeper Craig Nelson.

Chances were few and far between and while the SPL side never looked like losing their lead they will need to show dramatic improvement during the five-game tour of Holland that starts tomorrow ahead of the season opener.

Brechin: McCluskey (C Nelson 46), Murie (Walker 76), Dyer, Ward, White (Seeley 76), Nimmo, Byers, Janczyk (D Smith 67), Diack (A Nelson 67), C Smith, King.

Aberdeen: Langfield, Foster, Mulgrew, Kerr, Diamond (S Smith 50), Considine, De Visscher (Pawlett 46), Young (Paton 80), Miller (Stewart 80), Mackie (Maguire 70), J Smith. Subs: Bossu, Lascinel.

Referee: F McDermott.

• Partick Thistle wound up their pre-season programme last night with a 1-0 home defeat by Championship side Burnley. Icelander Joey Gudjonsson netted in the 44th minute after he had been set up by Latvian trialist Gatis Kalnins.

Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen are all so poor it is a bad reflection on Scottish football, which is still played with flair and passion in Govan.

Glad to say the Rangers DVDs arrived undamaged, and even my Archie McPherson coffee mug was intact.

#4 - so poor that you couldn't manage a victory against Aberdeen or Hibs away from home?
