SRU denies turning stadium into 'tip'

THE Scottish Rugby Union has flatly denied a claim that their players left Pittodrie in a mess after the autumn Test triumph over Canada on Saturday.
Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood accused both teams and the match officials of failing to treat the facilities with any respect – claiming the changing rooms had been abandoned in a "disgraceful state."

But last night it emerged that Calderwood hadn't even seen the so-called "absolute tip" and was making the allegations on the strength of tittle-tattle from cleaners.

Red-faced club backroom staff admitted Calderwood's outburst was "totally over the top" and insisted the Scots rugby side will be welcome back "at any time."

An SRU spokesman declared: "The Scotland rugby team always respects changing rooms and facilities, whether home or away and Saturday at Pittodrie was no exception."

He was backed up by a senior Aberdeen FC insider, who stressed: "The changing rooms were left in no worse or better a state than after any SPL fixture.

"You also have to consider the fact that they were being used by 15 players in the starting line-up and seven substitutes – along with all the physios and medics.

"Rugby players also have much more in the way of strapping and other disposable equipment.

"There were no problems. As far as the club are concerned, Jimmy's views on the matter were based on hearsay. What he said was totally over the top.

"He was at Ibrox with the team at the time and so was not in a position to witness the condition of the changing rooms.

"Saturday was a great occasion for Pittodrie. We staged a major sporting event, attracted a big crowd and Scotland pulled off an excellent victory.

"As far as we are concerned, the Scotland rugby squad will be welcomed back with open arms any time in the future."

In his rant, Calderwood described the rugby international as a "fabulous occasion with a near sell-out crowd" but added: "When staff came in to clean up the dressing rooms they couldn't believe the mess.

"It was an absolute tip to put it mildly and the officials' room was worst of the lot. It seemed as if they had never been told what bins are for. No SPL club has ever left Pittodrie in such a state and when we are on our travels we always tidy up before we leave.

"Rugby apparently has a very different code of behaviour and it was very disappointing to see our ground abused like that.

"It was the board's decision to stage the event and in my opinion it wasn't taken to generate more income in the current financial climate. It was taken to show certain people Aberdeen is capable of handling an international match."

Calderwood also moaned about the state of the playing surface, which had to be swept of snow before the kick-off.

"The weather was more of a factor than the actual rugby and right now the pitch has not recovered. It's not at its best but by Thursday I should be able to give a more accurate assessment of the playing surface."

what was the score at Ibrox? perhaps that might have more to do with it and not the dressing room. seems that the man was running off at the mouth. perhaps an apolgy might be forthcoming from him but an arrogant prat like that? do not hold your breath.

At least one team can win a home tie at Pittodrie. I hope they didn't damage his tanning machine.

Shock, horror- under achieving football manager opens his mouth and forgets to engage his brain in rant at others.

this is an unsavoury aspect of coming in to close contact with the round ball variety "professionals".

I had to use footballers changing rooms the other day - hair gel and fake tan lotion everywhere!

Of course it's the SRU's fault if Pittodrie was left like a tip - their current cost-cutting moves mean the players' valets and butlers weren't taken north and the poor chaps simply cannot cope without them.

That's the trouble with letting upper middle class Hooray Hamishes loose in a working class environment.

So the cleaners complained that there was a mess????

I assume the cleaners were employed to clean and unless there was damage, what is their problem. I assume Aberdeen F C were happy to take the rent money.

I know, what a disgrace leaving work for the cleaning staff to do. Other than wipe down the sunbeds and put out those studded bedroom slippers that footy players wear these days.

The only thing keeping the snow off the Pittodrie pitch this week will be the radiation generated by Jimmy Calderwood's fat perma-tanned orange face....

Is the man thick ? The local rag last night had him blaring about the state of the pitch - what did he expect after 30 guys running about on it ? Did the grounds staff nae think it might need a bit of extra TLC after it ? Ma heid !

The boy Jamie Smith is a maligerer - thought Scott Booth was unbeatable for keeping the physio busy, but this is a joke. He obviously disna want to play so get rid of. And the nutter Wright as well, who is obviously turning out to be the trouble maker that everyone knew he was - 6 or 7 clubs in the last 5 / 6 years ? Read a'tween this lines, min !

Far's ma rowies................?

Apparently they left Dan Parks in the dressing room - which may account for the comment about rubbish.....The SRU should learn their lesson - far better an empty, soul-less Murrayfield than these using these football grounds...imagine cleaners having to clean up...what next...or should that be... Fit next?

#5, You are a pain in the star!! However it's to be expected from someone who has NO idea about rugby or its supporters.
Question for you are you one of these bitter wendyball supporters who thought it not fair that the rugby supporters can have a beer at international matches but not the football fans, if so, how many football fans have been murdered at football games in Scotland these say, last thirty years?
And how many rugby fans have been killed at Murrayfield?
Your just a bitter and twisted bigoted dork, that thinks WRONGLY that everything to do with rugby is all toffs and money , and football is all about honest, hard working class folk.

I think not.
20

Who?,

26/11/2008 14:06:40
I'm really amazed the game was played in that dump of a ground. It has only one stand that would get a saftey certificate in the central belt as the others are some or all of crumpling, uncovered or poorly kept and lacking basic facilities.

Pittodrie should have been knocked down years ago but the club is so poor and badly run they can't afford another ground.

George Haley,

I would bet that prior to cleaners getting to most Soccer changing rooms that the 'poor' apprentice or boot boy probably has to clear up after his 'Senior' players. As for #17 if it was irony from #5 it was rather old, tired and very predictable.

#18 are you really the only red-haired lady in comfortable shoes living in Tain?
i think that Calderwood was piss*d after the drubbing at Ibrox and clearly the others in the management in Pittodrie consider he was talking pis*. anyway the home team won and that in itself must be unusual in those parts.

No wonder that the fat balloon is upset.

There would have been soggy biscuits and pints of urine all over the place.
