Afghan army set to double in size

AFGHANISTAN'S fledgling army, seen as the key to the country's long-term security, is to substantially increase its size, the UN said yesterday.
There are currently around 70,000 soldiers in the Afghan army. "The Joint Co-ordination and Monitoring Board, meeting today in Kabul, agreed the expansion of the army – increasing its strength to 134,000 personnel," the UN said in a statement.
