Published Date: 20 August 2008
FIGHTING close to Kabul killed ten French soldiers yesterday and injured another 21 as spectacular violence erupted across the country.
Officials said ten Foreign Legion paratroopers died in an ambush at Surobi, only 30 miles east of the capital.

Nato said they were attacked by more than 100 militants, while further east at least six suicide bombers tried to storm an American
army base, close to the Pakistan border.

French troops fought through the night, on Monday, killing 27 Taleban militants, after they were pinned down by gunmen.

French officials said that the insurgents attacked a reconnaissance party on a narrow mountain pass in the Uzbin valley, at exactly 1:30pm on Monday.

Nine of the ten dead were part of the reconnaissance party, who had left the protection of their armoured vehicles. The tenth man died later in an armoured car when the road beneath it collapsed.

Military sources revealed that four of the dead were captured and butchered after the insurgents overran their positions.

The grim death toll, confirmed yesterday in Paris, is the single biggest loss of life for international troops since an RAF Nimrod crashed in Kandahar two years ago, killing 14 British servicemen. It was also the first time so many foreign soldiers have been killed in open battle since the US-led invasion in 2001.

For France, it was the worst loss of life since 1983 when 58 paratroopers were killed in Beirut, and it comes amid fierce political opposition against moves to increase the country's military presence in Afghanistan.

France will have 2,600 troops in Afghanistan by the end of the month, after the president, Nicolas Sarkozy, sent an extra 700 soldiers in response to a US call for Nato allies to provide more forces.

The attack began late on Monday, as Afghanistan celebrated its Independence Day.

The dead and wounded were from the 8th Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment, the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment and the Regiment de marche du Tchad.

President Sarkozy travelled to Afghanistan last night. "My determination is intact. France is determined to continue the struggle against terrorism for democracy and freedom. The cause is just," he said.

Hours later, a Taleban suicide squad tried to overrun a large US base in Khost, just a few miles from Pakistan's tribal areas.

Three bombers detonated their vests close to Forward Operating Base Salerno, shortly before midnight on Monday.

The militants failed to hurt international forces, a US spokesman said. Three other bombers, and an accomplice, were later chased down and killed by US and Afghan troops backed by Apache helicopters.

The fighting in the city lasted more than 12 hours.

BACKGROUND

LAST week saw the highest levels of violence across Afghanistan since records began in 2001.

At least nine foreign troops, 19 civilians and 130 insurgents were killed.

Intelligence officials fear there are dozens of suicide bombers flooding into Afghanistan from Pakistan every day, while the Taleban have threatened to encircle the capital.

Nato insists that the enemy forces will never overrun Kabul, but the Taleban has succeeded in closing off Afghanistan's "home counties" by killing three foreign women on the road south, and attacking the French on the road east.

Most international organisations can only drive out of the city if they are heading north.

The attacks came as Pakistan's army chief, General Ashfaq Kayani, arrived in Kabul yesterday for talks on how to beat the insurgents on both sides of the border.

Renewed offensive - yes. Last big push before winter when they will go back to their Pakistani winter camps.

Tet? Don't think so. Haven't heard of any embassies - US/UK/CAN being directly assaulted.

#5 indune1, though the story does say not all the guys killed were Foriegn Legion the Foriegn Legion has it's own Parachute Battalion, 2 REP (2e Régiment étranger de parachutistes) so some of these guys were legionaires. Also the Foriegn Legion was incorporated into the regular French Army sometime back in the 90's with the same rights, privileges and pay as the French Army

If we did send the politicians out to fight, things might go a bit better when they got back. At the moment we do not seem to know who we are fighting or what they want. Knowing those things might help. Just labeling all of them as terrorists and therefor fair game is simplistic bull.

Just how long is this going to go on for. When will the western alliance get it through their blood thirsty heads, that this is not a war that can be won.

Even Alexander the Great gave up trying to conquer the place. These were among the best fighting soldiers in the world yet they were no match for the Taliban, in a fight that lasted 24 hrs.
What happens when much more inexperienced soldiers arrive.?. Afgahnistan is a massacre waiting to happen.

Lets hope the French army react to this loss with dignity and restraint, and not unleash an American type revenge attack, on innocent civillians.

Postmark-55,

Yet another reminder that no war can be won. War produces only losers, always has, always will. No politician will dirty their hands on any war, that's what the soldiers are there for, giving up their lives for no reason whatsoever. History just keeps repeating itself, over and over again, why is it that we never learn?

So just how many of these brave soldiers should have given up their lives to meet your standards of "putting in a bit of effort"? 20, 50?. Your comments are an insult to the families of the soldiers who were killed.
And, by the way, for your information, France severely condemned the Argentinians for their invasion of the Falklands contrary to what you suggest. And please, don't give me that sh*t about the exocet missile - those arms were sold to Argentina long before the UK engaged in warfare with Argentina.
As to Rwanda, the French may have made some political mistakes (which country doesn't) but they were in no way responsible for the civil war and resulting genocide. This has been confirmed by different independent international commissions. So get your facts right before spouting out such rubbish.

My commisorations to the Families of those that were injured or died in this attack.

The British during the time of the occupation of India, tried twice to beat the Taliban and failed.

The Germans failed twice during the same period of time to defeat them.

The Russians tried many times to defeat them and failed as well.

Now doesnt that tell you that we are peeing against the wind on this one. No amount of troops or armies will ever beat these people. Gordon Brown and Des Browne told us they were winning against the Taliban some 6 months ago and yet they surround the Afghani Capital and attack vehicles and non combatents every day of the week.

It would be really good, if someone could explain to us all, exactly why we are trying to beat these people who are in fact in their own country. The Taliban reduced Poppy Production to nearly zero before the west went in there. Since then the amount of drugs on Western Streets has got out of control.

Why exactly do we back the Israeli Jews who threw out the Palestinian People from their land and homes. Would we tolerate a race invading our country and taking our land and people from us, oh sorry we did.

Its time for an Independant Scotland to show the world that Muslims are no different to anyone else on this planet who just want what is theirs, and to get on with their lives in peace.

Muslims didnt start this conflict, the West did under orders from the USA. The Israelis have over 150 nuclear warheads aimed at muslim countries whilst the muslim countries other than Pakistan dont have one nuclear warhead.

Now I realise that as a white christian Scotsman I may be attacked for stating these views, but really I have only been pointing out the facts about how this mess was started by the west and in particular the Evil Empire that is the USA and its Jewish Lobbyists.

Yes a few fat muslim Doctors tried to set fire to glasgow airport. But lets face it they were puffing and panting their guts out because

Yes a few fat muslim Doctors tried to set fire to glasgow airport. But lets face it they were puffing and panting their guts out because they were amateurs and didnt even have a proper bomb.

Lets compare the amount of so called terrorist attacks by Muslims against the terrorist attacks by lets say the IRA and the UDA. Both these lot blew the sheite out of England and Northern Ireland for over thirty years, yet we didnt have the Politicians and media telling us that all Irish People were going to blow the sheite out of us and we would need to hold them for six weeks without charge. Muslims love their families just as much as we do. Muslim laugh and they cry when life is up and sometimes down. To be quite honest theres not a great deal between us except that we believe the brainwashing that the likes of Brown, Bush, Sarkozy, Merkel and the media that is owned by the Jewish People or the likes of Rupert Murdich. They tell us this is some sort of noble cause to defeat these people, just like the knights invasion of the supposed holy land in the middle ages. Theres nothing noble about war other than the attitude and behaviour of mates looking after each others back.

"The Israelis have over 150 nuclear warheads aimed at muslim countries"

And just how do you know this? All we have heard is heresay about Israel having a nuclear weapon. Have you even seen one of them let alone 150? Do you also know where they are aimed? You must be a genius!!!

We know Saddam had WMD's as he used them against his own people yet after Blair, Bush, and a few others rolled into Iraq and the WMDs went missing. Saddam claimed he had them but people like you say he never had them yet you claim Israel has 150 nukes. WOW!!!

General Blood dont you think its time to really face up to the truth and start to sort out this problem.

The Muslims didnt invade our three countries with armies intent on killing as many of us as possible just because they could. As someone who has lived through the Vietnam period, I marvel how the West invaded Vietnam to stop the Communist Spread over Asia, and now watch the Western People invest in their economy to exploit the poverty by having all our modern products made for the price of a bowl of rice.

The combined Armies of the West couldnt beat the Vietnamese. The British Army couldnt defeat the IRA or the UDA.The British Army got their erkies kicked in Aden. The Russian Army couldnt defeat the Afghanis even with Rambo. The British Army were beaten by the Indonesians and the Malaysian and the Nigerians. As a matter of fact they havent won a war for quite a while now, and I'll bet you a fiver that the parents of the dead soldiers wish their sons were with them right now.

Questioning the reason for wars isnt a crime. Not questioning the reason for any conflict is the real crime.

D whatever, Perhaps your education is lacking a bit but didnt you read the expose in the London Newspapers back in the Seventies when pictures of their Nuclear Warhead Manufacturing was plastered all over the front pages. Or that the Jewish Worker who blew the whistle about the Secret Bomb Makers, was imprisoned by the Israelis for Nineteen Years for treason. By the way out of spite the Jewish State kept him in Solitary Confinement for the entire Nineteen Years. He was just released by the Jews in the last couple of years, and still defends his actions of letting the world know the truth.

Get a Life by firstly getting an Education you silly little person.

D whatever, sorry mate but you are wrong again in your claim about WMD. Even now American and British Politicians are admitting that there was never any actual proof of WMD. If you recall Nuclear and Chemical Warfare Specialist Teams went into Iraq for over 6 months and never found the slightest evidence of any WMD's. As for Blair and Bush going in, well sorry All they did was send young men and women in there to die. They also killed one million plus Men Women and Children by going in there. Thats more than Saddam ever killed in his entire life as President.

Oh by the way Dick Cheny got very very rich out of the invasion, whilst a lot of youngb people got very very dead to make him and many others rich. Why do you think Tony Blair converted to Catholicism after he was chucked out by New Labour. He wants to believe that a confession will somehow stop him going to hell for mass murder.

Oh by the way D, BP now runs the Iraqi Petrol Refineries in Iraq now. Every single drop gives BP a nice income and our brave soldiers cant even get decent equipment or proper medical help now they are no use to the Westminster Pollies. Wake up and smell the roses D, you actually believe the guff that the media tells you to believe.Get out and start listening for a change, you might learn something you dont like, but at least you will know.

Vannunu, an Israeli nuclear technician working at Dimona, the Israeli nuclear facility smuggled photographs out proving Israel was manufacturing Nuclear Bombs.

He has been forbidden by the Israeli government to even speak to a foreign journalist since his release from prison.

Most credible foreign intelligence agencies estimate that Israel has about 200 nuclear warheads!

Why no sanctions?????
