COALITION forces killed ten militants in a strike against a bomb-making cell in eastern Afghanistan, US forces said today.
The troops were targeting key figures in a network run by Jalaluddin Haqqani, a militant leader believed to operate out of Pakistan.

Several groups of armed militants fired on the coalition troops during the operation yesterday. The coalition returned fire, killing their attackers and destroying a weapons cache.

Why are these people referred to as 'rebels'? They are defending their country against foreign invaders and occupiers of their country, they are not 'rebels'. They have every right to fire on foreign troops to get their country back, as any of us would do if somebody was to invade our land.

PM55-- perhaps the fact that the troops killed were engaged in armed insurrection against the coalition-aided forces of Afghanistan qualifies them as rebels. It's pretty straight forward, really.

In fact, calling them "Afghan" rebels, as this writer does, is merely a supposition, as, more than likely, the aforementioned rebel troops hail from a variety of countries and are united only in cause--militant islam.

As such, your claim that the rebel soldiers were only 'defending their country' is, in all likelihood, false as well since there is no one country (yet) to which they belong.
