THE last competition the residents of Cumbernauld entered was a televised one seeking the ugliest building in Scotland and offering a prize of demolition for the winner. They nominated their entire town centre.
Their civic pride seems to have blossomed in the two years since then, however - their votes have now helped put their home into the top 10 most treasured places in the country.
The nation was asked to vote for their favourite image of a treasured place from a list of 100 compiled by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland to celebrate its 2008 centenary.
The final 10 were revealed yesterday, with the Lady Victoria Colliery at Newtongrange, Midlothian, topping the list.
Manager of the Treasured Places project, Shiobhan McConnachie, said: "Places are treasured for lots of different reasons."
Votes can now be cast on the 10 entries and the winner will be announced on 11 December.
