MORE than 10,000 sightings of wild and exotic animals have been reported in the UK since 2000, and the figure is set to grow, according to a new study.
Some 5,931 sightings of big cats, 332 of wild boars and 3,389 of sharks have been reported.

The British Big Cat Society has reported a dramatic increase in sightings of the creatures in recent years, with 2004-5 figures already up 3.5 per cent on
the previous year's study. The study was commissioned by Disney to mark the DVD release of its film The Wild.

Animal sightings since 2000 also include 51 wallabies, 43 snakes, 15 owls, 13 dangerous spiders - including a tarantula and a Black Widow - 13 racoons, ten crocodiles, seven wolves, four eagles, three pandas, two scorpions and one penguin.

Chris Mullins, founder and co-ordinator of Beastwatch UK, who compiles data and reports on wild, exotic or rare animals in Britain, said: "Since the start of our organisation [in 2001], the number of reports has increased at a rapid rate, including monkeys stolen from zoos and private collections to colonies of wallabies and wild boar - and more unusual reports such as a chinchilla found in a post box, to a piranha in the Thames.

"It is clear that the UK contains far more exotic wild animals than the British public could ever imagine."

Exotic animal sightings have increased as a result of climate change, zoo thefts and animal escapes.

The south-west of England is the big-cat hotspot, while wild inhabitants of Leicestershire include numerous racoons. And in Oban, several monkeys have been sighted in the area.

Got to give it to the scotsman today, you cant leave comments on serious articles but you can on this one, great has given me a smile on a Monday morning, dont owls live in this country?
I assume its a weird and wonderful type not normally flying round the countryside.
Such a shame, for the penguin, all on its own

I saw plenty wildlife in Kirkcaldy High Street on Saturday morning. A lot of the beasts will be appearing in the Sheriff Court this morning if Beastwatch UK make their way along qickly they'll maybe be able to catch them before they are undoubtedly escorted by Reliance to Perth !

Farcical.

Have you any idea of how ridiculous it is to state that there was a "black widow sighting"? These spiders are TINY [emphasis is mine] and hardly run up and down the street wating to be clocked.

Has Mr. Mullins been at the E?

I saw all of these on the way back from the pub lastnight.

Also the dodo sighting does not surprise me either - as there are many dontdont sightings in that big expensive building that keeps falling apart in Edinburgh.

I believe there was a sighting in Dundee of a 16 year old girl that wasn't already a mother or pregnant last week!

A very rare sight indeed!

Nothing compared to whit ye'l find in Glesga. Depending on the time o' day, and day o' the week, the Great White Ned kin be spotted cruisin aboot the toon. On 'Giro day' these creatures will drape themselves in tribal gold, sport sexually alluring (to the female o' the species) shell suits and footwear and then head for the mating arenas of their choice. Vast quantities of that great sexual lubricant 'jungle juice', or 'lager', is consumed. Then the dance begins, normally in a sweaty rubber legged fashion. Mating calls of "Here doll d'ye want te get aff wae us?" or "I fancy the t**s aff you bye the way", can be heard the length and breadth of the chosen mating arena, normally Sauchiehall or Argyle street. Impressed females will sway seductively towards the male and their tribal jewellery will entangle them as the rite of "lager tongue tangling" begins. If successful the male will present a thumbs up sign or wink to his male companions, over the shoulder of his conquest, whilst attempting to hail a 'chariot of love' . This vehicle will speed the love struck pair to a miserable housing scheme somewhere in the depths of Glasgow where their tribal rutting will begin.

Doreen,

You make the whole ritual sound very exiting, even for an old Fettys Coll former pupil. The rut reminds me of the school showers, when Tony B. fisted Farqhar Fordice Findlay the son of the famous Jute entrepreneur.

AJ,

exiting should be exciting, even though exiting was somehow very apt.

You guys in Scotland have sharks, snakes, odd spiders and nasty ants that give you no trouble whatsoever. Same in Australia.
