A city student's China protest attracted some online knocks...as did stab vests for council staff and bus cash worries
An Edinburgh student's protest against China's treatment of Tibetans attracted a mixture of admiration and scorn from our online readership.

He could get 42 days jail without charge here for that kind of stunt. China though, will
probably be less harsh than that.

Congratulations and well done to Mr Thom – it is great to see someone with the guts to stand up for a cause they believe in, and to risk imprisonment.
PaulB

China is bound to cave in now – how can they resist. I hope these idiots get locked up for a long time.

Students have always been the important in the voice of protest, and are important as anyone else in representing a free democratic nation. It's right that they protested.

If Tibet had oil you would see quite quickly that Britain is not against getting involved in "other countries problems".

Hmnn...

The guy should be applauded for his idealism and conviction. But never mind Human rights abuses in China, What about the REAL issues – Trams and bins!

Not today I'm afraid. But still on the subject of the council, its operatives are being given stab vests...whatever next?

Good, and some Tasers wouldn't go amiss either!
allknowing

Waste of money, get the polis on the streets and out of their cafes drinking coffee.
alex paterson

Stab vest covers stomach but what about arms, or legs or any other part of the body? Still, waste of cash, paying them to do parking restrictions.
Darren

It's time to arm Council operatives with handguns.
A Friend of Fernando Poo

Aye...Magnums.

These people are incredibly brave dealing with knife wielding dog poopers and litter louts. They will look far more impressive dressed like Darth Vader.
Daft Old Git

Absolute waste of public money! This is not a one off payment. This will now be a stock item they now need to pay for. We could also issue them each with a chair and a whip just incase they come across a lion or tiger that needs to be kept at bay.

I dont see how this will deter the average bampot from threatening officials with a knife. We need proper proportionate sentencing e.g. Carrying a knife - 6 months GUARANTEED. Threatening with a knife - 1 year GUARANTEED Causing injury with a knife - 10 years GUARANTEED Killing with a knife - throw away the key GUARANTEED

Lothian Buses cash crisis has attracted critics...

Maybe they're just paying all their staff, from top to bottom, too much.
Brian Ferrari

Fare increases. HA HA Who would pay to travel on these bandwagons!!!
allknowing

Edinburgh council would be better looking at who planned all the road works in the city at the same time causing complete chaos.
motorist

I reckon this is just the first step before they crank up the prices.
