BACK in 1992, I visited Moscow for the first time. My wife was there on a business trip to acquire works from young Russian artists and showcase them in Britain.
Post-communist Moscow, only a few months after the Soviet Union had ceased to exist, wore a miserable, down-at-heel air. The young painters and sculptors were a Bohemian lot, working in the labyrinth of nuclear fallout shelters under the Moscow subur...

George is spot on. There is far too much macho posturing over this issue. We can't possibly hope to take on the Russians, even the Americans are reluctant to do so. Yet Russia still needs us to trade with. There has to be a more diplomatic approach taken.

#1 Who says the Russians can't be taken on?

Their defence budget is smaller than Britain.

Quite a bit smaller since Britain "ponches above its weight" in invading other countries. In the period George mentions Britain has invaded Egypt, Indonesia, the Gulf States, Iraq, Yugoslavia, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan & Iraq (also South Armagh, Malaya, Kenya, Aden & Rhodesia if George is including Chechnya) & participated in genocide in Biafra, Croatia & Kosovo. Unlike Russia none of these countries adjoined Britain or offered any sort of threat to us.

The fact that George is bitter that his wife did not get to snap up a lot of Russian paintings at, what I am confident is a very small fraction indeed of their current value, just as BP are having difficulty holding on to similar sweet deals cut after the fall, does not prove the Russians unwise. It merely proves they are not ignorant yokels to exploited by slick dealers like Mrs Kerevan & Mr Miliband consider themselves to be.

#3 the fact is that Neil has ignored the totalitarian nature of the Soviet Union.

Communists love killing people.
