IF WE needed any further reminders that the 2008 US presidential race steadfastly refuses to keep to the expected script, then witness the Republicans' surprise choice for vice-president, Sarah Palin. In one swoop, Barack Obama's nomination speech has been relegated to the second item in the news, while John McCain has demonstrated that the presidential race could go all the way to the wire in November.
