Being a supporter of public transport in all its forms we should continue to develop/improve both systems each has its part to play.
One reason why bus subsidies are lower than rail is that buses do not pay their full contribution to the costs of the highways they use.
Until the provision of the Free pensioners pass almost without exception bus usage throughout the uk has been falling. Rail does not get this MASSIVE benefit. In fact as a pensioner I have to pay £24 a year to get a 33% reduction in my rail fare.
This is even more substantial with the increasing number of bus lanes which are basically a track given free to bus operators by the local and national taxpayer.

I ommitted
Buses should get greater support than at present and the pensioners concession should be extended to rail.

I agree with the comment about low floor buses on the longer distance Borders routes. While we need these so that disabled people can use the bus, surely there is a way to provide seats with some cushioning. I know of one person who on a journey from Hawick to Edinburgh gets off at Dalkeith and changes bus simply to ease the back-ache and get feeling back into a numb backside.
