Dundee United 2 - 0 Hibernian: Win over Hibs takes United's unbeaten run to ten games

Published Date: 13 November 2008
DUNDEE United's aspiration to become the third force – the best side in Scotland outwith the Old Firm – was underlined by this merited victory over Hibernian last night which extended the unbeaten run pieced together by Craig Levein's men since 20 September to ten games.
It was also the first time United have beaten Hibs in the SPL in nearly three years. The Edinburgh side had gone nine league matches unbeaten against the Tannadice team since losing 1-0 at the same venue in December 2005.

Compact and assured, Uni
ted were made to fight for all three points by a resolute first-half effort from Hibs. In the second period, however, the Tayside club moved up a gear and exposed the continuing frailty in their opponent's defence. Darren Dods nodded United in front after 53 minutes and the predatory Francisco Sandaza wrapped up the success on the hour with another header.

Craig Conway was the pick of United's midfield and gave Sol Bamba, who was switched to right-back, a torrid time of it in the second half. The former Dunfermline player didn't stay tight enough on his man and most of the danger posed by United emanated down the left flank, where full-back Paul Dixon was also outstanding.

Whatever they lacked in height, the Hibs midfield trio of Ross Chisholm, Joe Keenan and John Rankin made up for in terms of the amount of ground they covered in the first half. Hibs didn't allow United's midfielders the time to dictate the rhythm of the game for 45 minutes. When they ran out of steam, however, United grabbed control.

Perhaps the turning point in the match arrived in the second half after Lukasz Zaluska made a terrific save from Colin Nish. After United went up the park and scored, the belief in Hibs bled away and the home side finished good value for their victory.

Having only won one of their previous five matches, it was no surprise Hibs rung the changes, though the extent of the revision was startling. Mixu Paatelainen re-cast his defence with Andy McNeil in goal, Bamba switched to right-back, Steven Thicot and Chris Hogg were paired together at centre-back and Ian Murray kept his place at left-back.

By contrast, United's manager, Craig Levein, contented himself by replacing the injured striker Warren Feeny with Roy O'Donovan. Otherwise he trusted the players who had carried United on a nine-game unbeaten run. Indeed, the last time United had lost a game was at Easter Road on 13 September.

Having secured three points but looked short of their customary fluency against Aberdeen, United were more like their tidy selves in the early stages of this game. That said, the first sniff of an opening fell to Hibs. Nish's clever back-heel flick created space for Dean Shiels and Lee Wilkie stepped in to make an important block.

O'Donovan's 16-yard angled shot, which McNeil did well to parry, was the closest United came to edging in front.

A poor back pass from Dods should have been punished by Nish. The striker's attempt at a back-heel, however, didn't come off and United breathed again.

Tempers flared when Keenan went down easily in the box and Wilkie made his displeasure obvious. Referee Eddie Smith reprimanded both players without reaching for his book. A few minutes later, though, the United captain was booked for a less torrid display of dissent.

United upped the tempo after the break and

with Levein's men prepared to play the ball forward more quickly and Hibs also eager to break, it was enjoyably competitive. If Dods was let off lightly when he lost possession and gave Nish the chance to shoot from 20 yards – Zaluska made a terrific save – the former Hibs player punished his old team with a superb header in the 53rd minute.

Having gone into the Hibs' box for a long throw which was cleared, Dods stuck around in the danger zone waiting for another opportunity. Conway swept over the tempting cross and the big defender rose to steer a header from eight yards into McNeil's top right hand corner.

The lapses in concentration which have cost Hibs dearly at the back this season struck again after an hour. Willo Flood's free-kick from the left caught the Easter Road side napping and Sandanza glanced home his sixth goal of a productive season.

Dundee United: Zaluska; Dillon, Dods, Wilkie, Dixon; Flood, Scott Robertson, Gomis, Conway; O'Donovan (Goodwillie 90), Sandaza. Subs not used: McGovern, Daly, David Robertson, Swanson, Kenneth, Kovacevic. Booked: Wilkie.

Hibernian: McNeil; Bamba, Hogg, Thicot, Murray; Rankin, Chisholm (Campbell 84), Keenan (O'Brien 72); Shiels; Nish (Pinau 72), Riordan. Subs not used: Ma-Kalambay, Van Zanten, Yantorno, Stevenson. Booked: Bamba.

So Jones' patience finally snapped and he has spoken out against this idiotic formation and team selection.

DVZ gets punished for the 1st goal on Saturday and Chris Hogg gets made Captain.

Bamba, our man of the match in midfield moves to right back and weakens the team still further.

Mixu, I believe has lost the respect of the players and it's now only a matter of a very short time.

What game was the writer at?

HIBS just stayed in the game in the first half - their 3 man midfield was outplayed and outthought by a mobile and intelligent DUFC 4....the gaps were evident and in the second half they were exploited and overrun...Apart from a bit of flash, HIbs offered very little and were lucky only to get beat 2-0
Bamba was lucky to stay on the park with multiple fouls against Conway, Dixon and Gomis....Hogg was as guilty
As for wee Derek, he looked very far from #1

A brief summary of Mixu's record so far.

Turned it round to start with wins over St Mirren, Killie and Aberdeen.
Went out of the Scottish meekly away at Ibrox
2 points from 15 post split. A shambles against Well in the final game.
No goals in pre-season.
Straight out of Europe.
Straight out of the CIS
4 home defeats already this season.
2 draws from all his games versus the OF/Hearts
No young player development
No progress - not a single decent performance, not even against Gretna at home.

Not good enough Mixu it's time to go.

I used to work with a guy in Portobello, he was a Hibby and a really decent bloke but he told me a story once that somehow seems relevant after reading this article...

This former workmate of mine had an old dog and he used to walk him around Arthur's seat. this dog liked nothing better than to run at the ducks in the pond and scatter them in the vain hope of trying to catch one.

One day after years of skidding to a halt at the water's edge and looking forelorn the dog must have taken one of them by surprise and actually grabbed one of the unfortunate fowl.

It is the next part of the tail and what ensued that reminds me of Hibs and their manager at the moment...

After years of bitter disapointment and finaly getting a wee bit of success, what did the dog do?... it just stood there looking bewildered and confused in a state of shock until the little duck took advantage of the situation and struggled free leaving the dog (Mixu) standing there trying to figure out what was going on.

Mixu is in fact a dog chasing ducks...

Mixu's stats in all matches played this season

--------------------------------------------------------------

Played 22 (including pre season)

Won 4

Lost 13

Drawn 4

I've not included the last 5 games from the split last season which i think we lost 3 out of 5.

This suggest to me that we are a team that is in freefall and unless swift action is taken we will unfortunately reap what we have sown. First division football and crowds of 6-8 thousand will not bee too far off .

Its funny, Hibs fans are all upset because they keep appointing former players with unimpressive track records. Yet ask who they want and Yogi Hughes tops the list for many. Ex-player, achieved nothing of note as a manager, will just be happy to be at Hibs so won't bother the board for money for players - perfect!

Hi VV,

I don't want to take the mickey mate but...

Coyle is doing very well where he is... Be serious.
Davies, maybe.
Burley, not a chance... He wasn't sure about going to Hearts and we gave him a lot of cash.
Calderwood, honestly don't know but again what would be on offer for him that he can't get elsewhere?
Sturrock, maybe.

The tghging is you have to ask yourself what Hibs would offer someone of that calibre that they won't get more elsewhere... I was amazed that you never got Yogi in when Collins or Mixu was appointed, he's the obvious choice. Hibs fan and a great manager who gets the best out of kids and older players.

That "01" shirt stunt is only ever going to end in disappointment and embarrassment - it's the Hibs way!

The ER board knows that Hibees lap up that kind of "all sizzle and no steak" rubbish though so they continually pander to the masses by appointing ex-players as managers, bringing back ex-players and so on - meaning they can always point to fan forums and so on and say they thought it's what the fans wanted.

Vincent Vega,

Saw the post below from a Hearts fan on another forum, how bad were Hearts last night, care to comment #32?

HEARTS

I don't have any mates in high positions behind the scenes. I dont' have any family members that know players or directors. So I don't have any 'knowledge'.

All I know is what I see. And I'm just home from Hearts vs. Hamilton. I am 36 years old and have NEVER in my life seen such a talentless, first XI with such a lack of skill or fight. That was the poorest team I've EVER seen.

We have an overdraft of c. £30m – less than Leeds Utd. who couldn't handle that still with 30,000 crowds. The value of our land in Gorgie has went through the floor. Our Chairman has lost millions through the Lithuanian Bank. We have no sellable assets – (Berra, £1m?, Driver, £800k?, Kingston £600k?) hardly enough to pay the monthly interest, never mind the total overdraft.

Nobody (surely) wants to buy an SPL football team. .!? – so I don't see an Arabian / Oil Baron white knight any time soon.

I don't see a future for us other than going bust. A depressing post – but I'm hoping someone can correct me. Even Airdrie going bust needed a Clydebank disappearing to give them a window of opportunity. What happens if Hearts go completely bust. .???? Can we re–emerge in the league set up? Who would buy us? What would happen to the ground?

Enough from me. . too depressed to keep typing. But says a lot for the SPL as much as Hearts.

35

Reasoned Debate,

13/11/2008 10:27:52
Don't know what price DU were last night, but it would have been the easiest money in the world. Hibs are in disarray. I can't believe the midfield Mixu chose last night. They are all way below 6ft and total lightweights. Moving Bamba to right back is the move of a deperate man. I'm not a believer in constantly changing managers, but this appointment has been a mistake. A Hibs ledgend ?, yes. A Hibs manager ?, definitely not. Couple all that with the fact that he appears to have lost the dressing room, and we are in deep trouble. Mixu has to go and a good manager appointed pronto (please no more ex OF players).
36

All that uncertainty at the club and yet we are 5 points clear of a team with none of these 'perceived' troubles...

Much of what this guy has said in his post is actually wholey innacurate too.

30 mil? huh... just pluck a number out the air eh.

Player prices?... Vlad would not sell those guys for such small amounts as he has proven he can get top prices for his players in the past. berra and Driver deals were knocked back for more than that.

UKIO? Don't own Hearts and just posted 20 mil profits in a time when bigger banks are taking a pounding.

Anyway all these issues are open for debate as noone really knows exactly what is going on with Vlad just now.

What is clear however is that despite all our supposed off-field problems we are still able to field a better team than Hibs... What's your excuse?

38

GeorgeCowieOrWalterKidd?,

13/11/2008 11:23:09
#34 I was at the game too and have watched Hearts for about the same time. If he thinks that's the most talentless group of players we've had, he's been picking and choosing his games all this time. I call a Hibee in disguise - it's not like that's an unusual thing.

As for admin rumours, I posted this on a more relevant thread:

Amazing that Hibs fans still prefer to discuss the finances of a Lithuanian bank rather than face the shortcomings of their own team.

Note to Hibs.netters saying Hearts are about to go belly up (again) because they think Ukio are about to go belly up (again). Ukio don't own Hearts; UBIG owns Hearts. So if the bank has to call in the Hearts debt, they don't come to Tynecastle asking for it, they go to UBIG.

As Romanov is both Chairman of UBIG and the largest shareholder of Ukio, that would be an interesting meeting. Sure, maybe HE'D decide to shut Hearts down - but good luck getting anywhere near 20m from the sale of the ground in today's market and a firesale of players. More likely, like a desperate house seller, he'd cling on or give in and sell at a knock-down price. Should we be forced into administration by a creditor here - same thing. Administrators will most likely look for a buyer at a knockdown price.

The fact is almost every business is worrying right now. I'm actually glad our debt is with Ukio and not HBOS - would probably have been called in by now.

39

DirtyDeeds,

13/11/2008 11:35:50
Interestingly enough, Ubig have sold a bucket of shares which is where they got their $ from.
Strange thing is though, no-one knows who the investor was - it's not shown.
Maybe they will release details of the investor later, but think that it's a valid point.

Does this confirm that there is going to be another buy-out?

Time will tell.
40

nostress,

grangemouth 13/11/2008 11:44:08
The main problem apart from losing more games than we should with the players we have is that the team doesn't look as if they're going to win one soon. It's not that there isn't plenty of effort from the players, just that this effort is misplaced and uncontrolled. I only remember one game this season when we looked in control and that was against Falkirk. The rest, even the wins, were games where we scrambled to hold on when we should have been in control - like I say plenty of effort but not with any real purpose. Last night again, Utd were able to race down the flanks without pause (just like Elfsborg in the first competitive game of the season) and why did Mixu bring on O'Brien (presumably to provide crosses)while simultaneously taking off our main target man Nish?
41

Rodney Trotter,

13/11/2008 12:00:22
I don't get a chance to see as many games these days as I would like but from what i can tell, mixu seems to be getting it all wrong. the 4-3-3 formation is nonsense. What is the point in trying to play 3 strikers when your not going to have a midfield that will get the ball to them. The fact that he stuck with that shows how brainless he is. As I said I don't see many games now but looking at his signings, they seem to be either no beter than the players already there or, distinctly worse. Van zanten? Thicot? Keenan? Rankin? Bamba? Nish? And from what I hear, the football isn't even very good to watch!
42

Hertz Nil,

Wher the grass used to be greener 13/11/2008 12:39:37
Mixu's 4-3-3 formation was commendable to start with. At least he was trying an attacking policy and on the odd occasion, at ER, it might work well. It does not work however against every team, week-in week-out, and least of all against a well organised on-form side playing at home. No other team plays 4-3-3, even clubs with far better strikers to accomodate than we have, so FFS change it!
We have a decent squad, not world beaters, but good enough to cope with most of the other teams. All we need is an organised formation and consistent selection.

Mixu, swallow your pride and make the change before it's too late for all of us.
Then we will climb back up the table, and the Fartz fans, who have no real reason to gloat, will hopefully b***** off back to their slum to await the Tesco bulldozers.

Deal with your own teams problems and let Hearts worry about their's.

At the moment I am not too worried about us actually, romanov is in for the long haul and his companies are doing very well compared to most of the others including the big banks.Unlike Petrie Vlad is not lining his pockets with cash from selling his best players.

We are not playing well yet are sitting 4th in the league. The san giro flair team are 8th a few points away from bottom, gonna be some battle between yourselves and Hamilton for the drop.
