Dundee Utd 1 Hamilton 1: Late equaliser fails to calm irate Levein as he lambasts luckless Hamilton

IT WAS deep into injury time and Hamilton looked to be cruising towards their first win in two months when real drama struck.
Darren Dods met a Craig Conway corner and the ball cannoned off Brian Easton and went in leaving a Hamilton side, already down to ten men after Simon Mensing's red card, devastated. Until that point it had seemed that Richard Offiong's eighth minute
opener would lift them off the foot of the table but those final agonising seconds could prove crucial in the relegation run-in.

Still, the late goal wasn't enough to calm down United manager Craig Levein. "Hamilton came here with a gameplan to spoil the match," he said. "We were only 15 minutes in and they were already wasting time. Don't tell me they play good football, that wasn't good football.

"They tried every trick in the book to stop the game. I asked the kitman to put his watch on the fouls in the second half and never mind five minutes injury time, there should have eleven-and-a-half minutes. If that had been the case we would have scored three or four."

Yes, it's a cruel game and right now no-one knows that more than Hamilton boss Billy Reid. While Gretna were almost down and out before a ball was kicked in anguish last term, his side won't go down without kicking or screaming. But unless lady luck shines on them soon, they could be without a win for some time.

Yet it all started so well. The impressive James McCarthy started the eighth minute move with a clever pass wide for Mensing, who in turn delivered a crisp first-time ball into the six-yard box.

Offiong beat the offside trap to tap home and United, many people's tips for a Europa League spot, were undone by their little-fancied visitors.

As expected, United tried to bounce straight back into the game and they almost did so on 16 minutes. Craig Conway crossed, Francisco Sandaza controlled, turned and shot only for Mensing to deflect wide for a corner.

James McArthur then came close with two long-range strikes before the break. Firstly, he fired inches wide from 25 yards then, from a similar range, his dipping lob was saved by Zaluska.

The second period was far less entertaining than the first with most incidents centring around referee Crawford Allan. With several meaty challenges and the game threatening to spiral out of control, Allan stamped his authority on 56 minutes.

Lee Wilkie's poor challenge on McCarthy led to a deserved yellow card for the United skipper and sparked fury amongst the Hamilton players, with Mark McLaughlin and Scott Robertson both booked for a touchline spat.

Then Hamilton really should have tied it up as United were cruelly exposed at the back with Mensing setting up the unmarked Offiong who was far too casual from 15 yards in shooting wide.

Mensing was then red carded for a second booking after getting involved in the afters that followed a McArhur tackle on Conway before deep into injury time United "earned" a leveller.

Craig Levein complaining about referees and teams time wasting - well I never!!!!
He'll be in line for the next Celtic vacancy with paranoia at those levels.
Performances like the one put up by Hamilton at Tannadice can be seen at Ibrox and Parkhead every week, in attempts by the visiting teams to secure a point.
Hamilton had enough chances to win the game so I don't think they can be accused of negative play.
Calm down Craig and admit it wasn't your day.

#1 Typically for an Orc you are an expert.
You were not at the game, and believe me when I say that Hamilton showed a level of cynicism not seen since the days of Gregor Stevens and Tam Forsyth were they were mowing down opponents.
They got what they deserved. Evein called it as he saw it,and as I saw it.
I take it you werent at Ibrox when United 'sat in' for a 3-3 draw?
Thought not.

#1 - Obviously not at the game yesterday. If you were, you would see it differently. United were rubbish - Fact. Hamilton were a disgrace to he SPL - Fact. Referee was the worst ever at Tannadice - Fact.

Obviously i was not at the game but 'our Craig' (and their supporterS)must take the rough with the smooth.....he regularly sent Hearts to Glasgow with a business plan to shut up shop.

The ref was shocking but that doesn't disguise a poor United performance...
The ref lost the plot...Accies played him as a sucker...every kick-out took a minute evry throw-in 30secs...if he'd stampled down on their blatant time wasting and persistant nasty fouling, there would have been maybe two bookings and a decent game....

#4 - I'm OK that teams "shut up shop" and if United want to be 3rd force they have to deal with this type of tactic, absolutely. However, please believe me when I say Hamilton did EVERYTHING to cheat their way through the match yesterday. From timewasting from the moment they scored, to harassing the referee with 3 / 4 players around him at every opportunity - and everything in between! It's not sour grapes - you just want to see an honest game of footy. Yesterday was not this.

#6 appreciate i was not there & you were. Also agree not like Craig to greet for no reason therefore accept must have been OTT.

##now that the penny has dropped with Mixu that you will not win games without amidfield it is a three way fight for 3rd(Hearts /utd & hibs)....UTD first 11 are as good as anyone 'do they have the strengh of pool to last the pace? Even without adding players ,with players returning to fitness/young players breaking through i am confident we will be there to the deeath/will just shade it.

#7 Agreed, I think 3rd/4th place could be an interesting battle, especially with Europe (or Europa, whatever they call it now adays!) up for grabs. United have the depth IMO - it's how Levein uses this that could determine where United finish.
Hibs are a strange team - 4:1 against Well is a great result, but getting beat from ICT is not. Hibs/Hertz/United must get consistency in results (PS - we beat Hertz 3-0 a few weeks back and they were terrible. But they still get the results!).

#9 - What were Hamilton like when you guys played them a couple of weeks ago? Anti Football or did they try and play something resembling footy? Just interested.

The ref yesterday was like a wee boy who'd been asked to referee a man's game for a laugh. No presence, no courage, no confidence, and absolutely no control over the players. And this was for both sides, a couple of times he ignored blatant fouls by Utd players that the Arabs around me were reduced to laughing at. Accies' time-wasting was something else, unfortunately the only folk who will ever be able to experience just how amazing it was were the ones at Tannadice. They were time-wasting from the 10th minute on, and all the ref did was keep pointing at his watch time and time and time again - and do nothing. Meanwhile, two mass brawls break out and he wonders why.....

#11 Played decent football & not guilty of any of issues highlighted.
However they were chasing game as we were one up.

Next game v UTD at Tynie will be important for both clubs.

SOFBTRC,

Far, far from Glasgow 23/11/2008 19:14:31
The worst thing that could have happened in the game yesterday was for Hamilton to score first, early in the game. Thereafter, the "tactics", which were based predominantly on cheating in various guises, made an absolute farce of the game. Of course, Billy Reid knew that the referee was a rookie, and that he would not be able to deal with the sort of "pressure" that Hamilton could put him under, and that's what he sent his players out to do. It very nearly got them 3 points, but if you want to know whether that's a legitimate way to get something from a game - well why don't you ask the 14 travelling fans. Football is meant to be a form of entertainment, and Hamilton could be sued for failing to provide a product that the punters had paid for. No wonder even their own fans don't go out of their way to watch them.

This doesn't disguise the fact that United were not good enough. If we want to be in the top 3 or 4, we need to be able to put away teams like that comfortably - and if we had scored first, we would have done.

At the end of the day, Hamilton were cheats, and the referee can't be blamed for that. But he can be blamed for failing to do ANYTHING about it. His performance was utterly pathetic, and if he can turn round in all truthfulness and claim that he's worth a grand for that performance (is that what they're getting now?) then I can see job opportunities for thousands of unemployed people in Scotland. No experience required. Make a mint for one afternoon of work every week.

Then again, as McVicar would say, "It's only Dundee United against Hamilton - who cares?".
