Published Date: 08 November 2008
THE true scale of the congestion misery in the Capital is today revealed by figures showing that there are almost 400 sets of roadworks currently under way in the city.
The figures and maps from John Gooday, Scotland's first roadworks commissioner, unsurprisingly show that the city centre in particular is blighted by dozens of sets of "high impact" works.

The level of disruption was today described as unprecedented and led to calls for better co-ordination between the city council and utility companies.

Both the council and the commissioner, who was appointed to the newly created position by the then Scottish Executive in March last year, came in for criticism from motoring groups and traders, many of whom have seen their businesses suffer as drivers find it harder to get into the city.

Gordon Burgess, chairman of the Leith Walk Traders' Association, said: "I don't think there's any doubt that this is the worst it has ever been – it's an absolute scandal. The whole city is a mess and there seems to be very little co-ordination going on."

Mr Gooday was charged with improving the planning, co-ordination and quality of roadworks throughout the country.

But the so-called "cone tsar" today came in for criticism from the Institute of Advanced Motorists, which accused him of being "very low profile".

Neil Greig, head of policy in Scotland for the IAM, said: "The only positive note is that we are now getting these maps and this information. If the commissioner is producing these maps, then he's going to have to do something about the roadworks.

"He's been very low-profile. Everybody had high hopes for him, and he will need to show over the next year or so that things are getting better."

When the Evening News checked the Scottish Roadworks Register website yesterday, which provides real-time updates, there were 392 sets of roadworks being carried out in the city.

Most of them are the responsibility of the city council or utility companies, including Scottish Gas, ScottishPower and BT.

A council spokeswoman said:

"At any one time, there are approximately 100 sets of works going on in the city. The higher figure represents many completed jobs and those yet to begin."

A spokesman for Mr Gooday said he was taking a "strategic view" of roadworks and continuing to work alongside local authorities as part of the Roads Authorities and Utilities Committee Scotland (RAUCS).

where's the council insider today ?

"A couple of holes in the road and some diversions can hardly be described as chaos" said the Council Insider yesterday

so 392 works on the road is a couple of holes, my !, never mind all the potholes and broken pavements

Edinburgh is currently the laughing stock of the UK with the shambolic handling of the ridiculous quantity of roadworks blighting the streets of our capital city.

I feel that one of the most disappointing and depressing aspects of all these roadworks (especially the enormous amount of tram roadworks) is that scores of local businesses are being severely affected them.

With many businesses already looking like they are going to have to shut their doors for good, the council and TIE seem not to give two sh*its about what happens to them, as long as they get their toy tram LINE built...

In short, an absolute diagrace.

Where do all the guys come from who are digging up the streets? With almost 400 sets of roadworks there must be 1000 or more people doing the digging. No wonder unemployment levels are supposed to be exceptionally low in Edinburgh.

When the good people of Edinburgh rejected the congestion charge, there were warnings that this sort of tactic would be used to cajole the populace into demanding a charge after all.

#2 completely agree 392 is a blatently false figure, you could safely double that 392 may be the number currently being actively worked on but there are hundreds of holes which appear to have been forgotton about,it is another ridiculous example of labours obsession with statistics,a problem is reported so utility digs hole, technically they are responding to the report but not actually solving the problem, just digging another hole.

While in Spain we watched 5K of a dual carrigeway be resurfaced in two weeks with no disruption to traffic. How come it takes a year to do the same job here.

This has to be laid at the Council's door. They could and should be doing much more to manage the number and nature of roadworks in the city.

It's not rocket science, it just needs some focussed hard work and a desire to improve the current situation.

Phil Wheeler ? He's probably more worried about what he's going wear to Dobbie Aldridge's wedding bash tonight than what's happening in the streets of Edinburgh.

For many a month there was not a road into Edinburgh that didn't have road works on it no matter what route you took, now that is what I call planning, my 4rse !!!!
This is complete and utter disgrace and I hope the people of Edinburgh show thier anger and disgust at the next council elections, this lot couldn't plan a free plss up in a brewery. Ferkin useless bunch of bumped up council retards.

The road crews used to be able to resurface the entire side of a road overnight back in the 1990's (Hanover Street, 1993/94).

That list doesn't include the roadworks outside of the city bypass either. Bus timetables in these areas become useless as half-hour frequency services regularly have 15-minute delays.

*Please enter your comment*Road workks!!! Boswall Road has been closed off since February. Nothing to do with the trams. Sometimes there is work going on but it is intermittent.
In the US when they are working on the roads, they close off just the area they are working on, impose fines if anyone speeds and the work is completed quickly with minimum of disruption. Here they spend days closing off areas where they will work on in the next year and then take a break. Effect - massive disruption to all.

Strange isn't it, they can have an earthquake in Los Angeles, the whole road infrastructure is demolished ten lane elevated highways collapse and are turned to rubble, almost by magic they have it all sorted and back to normal within months - how come?

Terry del Fuego,

Beirut (aka Leith) 08/11/2008 21:58:33
Oh come on, all these complaints from evil motorists...these measures are designed to make life better for pedestrians, the people who really matter...

Hang on a mo

The wooden bridge across the river in St Mark's Park has been closed for renovation. This means pedestrians from the town centre have to walk all the way round through Canonmills or Newhaven Road. Time to complete renovation? FOUR months!

Junction of Ferry Road and Newhaven Road closed in two directions to allow for pavement widening or something. Timetable to complete? In excess of two months. In the meantime there is gridlock seven days a week and pedestrians, yep. pedestrians, cannot cross the road without a last cigar and a blindfold as there are very few crossings. That's if they have managed to negotiate the lab rat maze of fences and barriers to get along the remains of the pavements. Ditto for Constitution Street.

Actually, the Israelis destroyed much of downtown Beirut in 2007 and guess what? There are new buildings all over the place and it's easier to walk across than here.

The fools who "town planned" this embarrassing shambles should be dropped off a cliff.
25

Frankly Mister Shankly,

The reason this happens time and time again is that the companies digging up the roads know they're untouchable. Who's going to punish them for going over planned schedules or carrying out shoddy work? Nobody that's who.

26

stuartyboy,

I'm quite sure it's a case of job creation,we have
all these men here doing nothing lets get them
working by digging up roads, here's a map of Edinburgh
stick a pin in it and we will start digging there.
These people have got Edinburgh like a giant patch
work quilt, one that the moths have been at,due to the
amount of holes and ruts everywhere, get a grip!

Roadworks which affect motorists also affect passengers using public transport ie. buses.
It's bad enough when high frequency services don't stop because they are stuffed full of passengers (No's 25,34 between 8am and 10am), only to be late by another 20 minutes due to roadworks. This affects NHS appointments because patients then miss their appointments.

#24 Terry,

You think that's bad...time to resurface the cobbles in Thirlestane Road. 1 year.

And they seemed to think that everything would be fine as long as they put the timetable up on signs.

don't even think about getting a 26, you'll be quicker walking.

there's more chance of seeing Lord Lucan riding shergar down Portobello High street than seeing or hearing Cllr Wheeler.

fairpoint no.22 what is the story with boswall road and how does it take nine weeks to resurface the junction with ferry rd and newhaven rd.And the roadworks at seafield rd are beyond a joke i use that roundabout at least two times a day and see two men working who is in charge of these things.
33

Frangipan,

Boswall Road - Scottish Water and the rumour is that they only discovered the Wardie Burn when they had dug down and this caused problems requiring different equipment - don't know if this is true. It has meant that the residents in the affected part of Boswall Road havent had access to their driveways in this time, we have to make long detours around the roadworks to get anywhere and sometimes deliveries and refuse collection vehicles cannot get access to side streets because of contractor vehicles. AAAAAgh!!!!
34

only 5 more working days and all hell breaks out on Portobello High Street and Sir Harry lauder Road.

Warm up show on Saturday 15th, Full Show starts Monday 17th, don't expect your 26 bus to be on time.

But hopefully for once the Council have it right and everything will run smoothly

because of the road works happening at kings road round-about...what used to be a 5 to 10 minute journey to school in the morning with my daughter...now takes half an hour or more, we are stuck in crawling traffic..which is horrendous...i pay £444 per year for a bus pass and £1.20 a day for bus fares for my daughter...but we end up getting off 3 or 4 bus stops before and walking the rest of the way, do we really need all these so called 'improvements'?? I dread getting on the bus knowing we are gonna wait forever to get there!
37

Janie,

portobello 10/11/2008 00:52:49
34* I had forgotten they were closing down portobello high street...its gonna be horrendous!!! the 26 bus is my main bus route to and from school...so i guess unless i start to take my daughter to school at 7.30am..i've no chance of getting there for 8.50am, as i already leave at 8.10 for what used to be a 5 minute journey...i aint a hope in hell!!

one of the major problems seems to be that "Digaholeandleavit" get away with not closing up repairs after the work has been done, whether this to save cash by backfilling all other works at one time or just indifference who knows ?.
The council could and should make contractors who open up the roads and leave work unattended pay a fine for every day it does so, why not use the traffic wardens for this ? at least they would be doing something that benefits the community.
