TRAM works at Haymarket are set to be completed by Christmas, it was revealed today.
A major utility diversion project at the busy junction has been ongoing since August and has involved a series of traffic diversions for buses and general traffic.

Willie Gallagher, executive chairman of tram firm TIE, made the announcement while welcoming the confirmation of a works embargo along Leith Walk over Christmas.

He said: "This break has been approved in recognition that tram construction work has been ongoing in Leith Walk for some time. It's also important that we balance the needs of local traders along with the complexity of the tram construction programme.

"As part of striking the right balance we need to be sensitive to the needs of local businesses."

Wow....so they will cease causing massive obstructions at Haymarket over Christmas, when everyone is on holiday and when commuter traffic is at its lowest. Then, once the new year kicks in, they will rip them all up again, causing massive disruption for road traffic, buses, train users, pedestrians etc while they start to finally, maybe, actually lay some tracks.

What will they be laying tracks for? I thought with all this digging it was an underground system they were putting in.

"TRAM works at Haymarket are set to be completed by Christmas". Well, that's rubbish, isn't it? "Completed", as in tracks down and trams running? No! Some indeterminate phase of the works will be completed by Christmas with puh-lenty more to come between Jan 2009 and 2011 (mebbe).

Today's Vote

Would a Transport Edinburgh branded napkin win your support for trams?
No, they’ll need to bribe me with something better than that
Yes, it’s a legitimate way to promote the project
I’m already in favour of the trams
