TIE insists it's not to blame for flooding

Published Date: 07 August 2008
TRAM company TIE has again denied it is to blame for persistent flooding on Shandwick Place after the street was turned into "a swimming pool" for the second time in less than a week.
Walter Giudice, of La Piazza restaurant, said water was again seeping into his basement when a second spell of heavy summer rains swept through Edinburgh yesterday.

TIE issued a statement saying it was "confident" its workmen were not to blame for similar floods last week. However, it has now confirmed that a drain was removed from outside Mr Giudice's restaurant.

A council spokeswoman also confirmed that "a number of gullies may have been removed and not reinstated".

She added: "Along with this, a blocked gully and one that is slow-running will have been contributing to the flooding."

But a TIE spokesman said: "We stand by our original statement. The investigation was carried out by skilled engineers who concluded that the flooding in that area could not be attributed to the recent utility diversion work.

Credit crunch, global warming, poverty, aids, international terrorism, illegal wars for oil, youth crime - all the fault of TIE.

There was a drain there and no flooding now the drain has been taken away by TIE workmen and there is flooding. Perhapps TIE may want to come up with a better explanation than simply it wisnae us.

I don't this it helps the case of those who support the Tram Line project to respond in the the manner number 2 does. We're not talking about broken eggs were talking about a broken frying pan. If the street gets flooded what does that mean for the Trams that will, eventually run along it. They can't be diverted along another street in the way that buses can.

TIE need to be sued by the business affected by this incompetence. I am shocked by how much stupidity the business community in Edinburgh have tolerated from the council and TIE. an example needs to be set. SUE THEM!!

The last thing Edinburgh needs is a bloody Tram put through it, i think it is appaling that this is being done and its serves only a tiny part of the Edinburgh commiunity whiole the majority who gain nothing from having it have to 1. Put up with things like that and delays and 2. Have our beautiful city spoilt by this ugly machine, just watch our award as number 1 place in the UK to live be taken back, im moving out of Edinburgh as it is all about the money and nothing about the locals.

Bon Voyage Britain

I live on Shandwick Place and since TIE visited the area and started making a mess of Haymarket they have certainly left some large puddles. Buses hurtling by are showering people day on day right outside La Piazza so it is no wonder that their basement is being flooded. I'm not one of the increasingly growing number of 'Blame it on the tram' people - however TIE have definately removed a drain and gullies. As a result, people are getting soaked, the place is flooding regularly with the increased rainfall and damage being done to local property. This is a pure engineering miscalculation - fix it TIE before I lose the will to support the trams any further and join the masses.

Zoo, I know lots of people from Edinburgh and I don't know anyone who wants or thinks we need a tram.
This is a bit suspicious though and think TIE would get a little bit more support if they just put their hnds up said sorry and fixed the problem.

I guess now we know who has been nicking all those drain grilles and flogging them off for scrap...

This will be the "self funding" bit of the business plan, no doubt.

Would a Transport Edinburgh branded napkin win your support for trams?
No, they’ll need to bribe me with something better than that
Yes, it’s a legitimate way to promote the project
I’m already in favour of the trams
