Tram work slump hits new group of traders

Published Date: 17 November 2008
TRADERS on St Andrew Square have become the latest group to complain that their businesses are suffering from the ongoing tram works.
Shopkeepers and restaurateurs have joined the chorus of similar businesses on Shandwick Place and Leith Walk claiming losses of up to 60 per cent since the tram works moved in. North St Andrew Street is currently completely closed off.

Assader Ali
, owner of Zest on the corner of Clyde Street, said he missed his rent payment for the first time in eight years last month and fears for the future.

He said: "By this time of year, my December booking sheets are normally full with office parties, but this year it's dead.

"People have been sitting down and placing orders, but after enduring the noise of jackhammers for ten minutes they cancel and walk out.

"When the tram works finish for the day, the place is engulfed in darkness, as there's a streetlight out and the council can't get anywhere near it to fix it, so I'm being hurt day and night."

Mr Ali rejected suggestions that the economic downturn was a contributing factor, saying his other two businesses away from the tram route are doing well.

Fellow restaurateur Phool Chand Thakur, international Indian chef of the year 2007 and manager of Nine Cellars on York Place, has reported a similar downturn.

He added: "People have nowhere to park, so we've had plenty of people phoning in with bookings, but when they see the state of the place they cancel or simply don't turn up."

Parking problems have also been blamed for the downturn in trade at Robbie's Services cobblers and Troon clothes store on York Place.

Jimmy Fairgrieve, owner of Robbie's Services, has a sign in his window that reads "Tramworks Edinburgh: Ripping the Heart out of Local Business".

A spokeswoman for Troon said the business is currently being kept afloat by the company's second store in Cambridge.

"I understand we're facing an economic crisis, but even then you'd only expect a seven or eight per cent drop," she said.

"The other store is doing well, so the credit crunch is not to blame for what's going on here.

"The only business that's making any money is the sandwich shop next door, where the tram workers go for their lunch."

A campaign is under way to secure a rates rebate to companies affected by the trams.

Mr Ali received a letter from the Lothian Joint Valuation Board (LJVB) asking for his contribution to a report it is compiling on the effects of the tram works on city traders.

He reported a 50-60 per cent downturn in trade and no concessions from his landlord.

A spokesman for trams firm TIE said business would be supported. "Areas such as St Andrew Square have seen a recent rise in footfall.

"Edinburgh's unique Small Business Support Scheme has already given businesses along the route financial assistance and is supporting Open for Business initiatives across the city. Should any businesses wish to get further information on the scheme and its grants, they should contact TIE.

"We will continue to work with businesses and business organisations to ensure that the shopping opportunities in the Capital continue to attract consumers."

Absolute genius well done Labour!

Spend millions putting in a system nobody wants.

Disrupt an already congested city centre

Reduce the revenue into an already struggling retail sector.

And people love it! The union works!

Fools every one!

Well bully for you that you can pay 'current' costs for 3 years.

What about inflation & unforseen costs? I'd imagine that the downturn as a result of the tram works fell into the later category. How do you plan for that?

Edinburgh doesn't need a tram system, it has a perfectly good bus service, it would be different if Edinburgh was not already well served by buses.

What a pack of lies this article is. What - Christmas office parties walking out because of the noise? Never mind that there haven't been any Christmas parties yet, the ones I've been at are so deafening you'd be hard pressed to hear if a bomb went off. And people not going to a restaurant in the city centre because there isn't a street lamp directly outside? Laughable.

There is a huge amount of parking in that area - the St James car park is less than five minutes away, and cars can park on York Place on Sundays - don't make me laugh!

And how many Christmas parties have been held yet? Most are not for another week or so. Totally feeble excuses to yet again have a go at the trams.

THE TRAMS ARE COMING!!!

Once more the only winner is apathy. Too many people who don't want the trams LINE, are so fed up with all the bad reports, they no longer care. So much bad news has been drip fed through these pages, that everyone and their dog knows this fiasco will collapse, before a tram hits the rails. But there is not one councillor or MSP brave enough to come out and say, it's time for a re-think. Tie, Labour ,Lib Dems and the Cons. should sit down and admit they have made a big mistake, but come the time the trams fail they will all be screaming they had nothing to do with it and wanted it stopped. Well you lot here's some news,we have long memories and come the next election you better have your stories straight.

#20 & 24 - did you actually read the article before donning your Happy-Clappy Tram Supporters Anoraks? Nobody has 'walked out of a Christmas Party' - Mr Ali is simply saying he'd expect his December bookings to be full by this time - they're empty, and some walk-in customers are walking out. As North St Andrew Street has looked like the Battle of the Somme for weeks, the south and east sides of the Square are no-go areas, while footways and walkways are a dangerous, unlit shambles, does that come as a surprise? Meanwhile, a "A spokesman for trams firm TIE" trotted out the same old meaningless PR-Spin cliches.

#28 - Yes, I read the article and unlike you I can spot a con artist when I read one. So people who have eaten at his restaurant are not going again, and this is all the fault of the trams? Perhaps his food's rubbish. And as anyone with half a brain knows, tram work has not made the streets noisier since there's less traffic. Use your loaf, people.

Having thought about this, i think a lot of the business complaining are essentially are surplus to the city and economy. If the companies supposedly suffering were supplying something that was essential to people then they wouldnt be in the position that they are now. But they are not. Its shops like cafes resturants, kilt shops, trendy backpacker fake aussie pubs etc that will closedown. And i think thats a good thing. Most of the patrons for these type of business are fickle shallow dolly bimbos and their monobrow footballer boyfriends. Good riddance.

My understanding is that the tram scheme is currently on time and to budget - at least, from the public sector's perspective. I don't know what's happening with Carillion's finances and I don't care. The time-table may slip, but no-one has been able to put forward any evidence to suggest that it will. At the moment, it's just blind moaning from glass-is-always-half-empty types.

Then your understanding is wrong.

It has been acknowledged that the project will be delayed, for various reasons - mainly poor project management etc.

And, when projects are delayed, costs rise. With something of this scale, they rise a lot.

It's not just the future costs that have to be considered, it's the costs that we have already paid in terms of cutbacks in other budgets and other vital services.

This laughable project should be halted with immediate effect.

The rest of the utilities work should be completed and then, with the rest of the remaining funds for this idiotic scheme, all the roads which have been dug up should be properly re-surfaced and the centre of town put back to how it was several years ago when traffic actually flowed pretty well in central Edinburgh.

What money that is left should then be used to compensate IN FULL, all those businesses that have had their profits stolen from them by the tram works.

49

Dragonlord,

17/11/2008 20:10:22
45# You ask for evedence of delays? The tram works were meant to stop during the festival, but continued due to running late and they tried to catch up. However as no-one can ever be seen working, they failed.

#45 Antifa,

Actually, the project is not on schedule. When it was evetually given the go ahead last year the scheduled opening was February 2011. Now it's October 2011.

On saying that, talk of trams up and running in 2023 or even 2013 is just wishful thinking from the anti-trammers. TIE employees are on mega bonuses if the scheme finishes on time. Does anyone actually think they're going to let it slip too far?

I find it difficult to fathom why this shambolic project continues. HOW HAS THERE NOT YET BEEN A RESOUNDING CALL FOR A PUBLIC INQUIRY? Given the current economy, surely now is the time to take an informed decision on whether to halt this project rather than silently watching our funds get so wildly misspent. I’d have thought there would be some lessons learned nationally with the trams in Leeds being the non-success that they are. However unique and stunning the Scottish Parliament building might be [heralded], a review after the fact doesn’t undo gross overspending, and that’s a lesson that should hit closer to home.

Go blame Margo MacDonald for this and then blame Labour. They forced the trams through although the SNP were against. These hundreds of millions could have improved road safety across the land - like the A9 and A82 but no; they wanted your businesses in Edinburgh destroyed instead. Think about that next time you vote or just live with it and be quiet.
