ARISE, Sir Penguin. Nils Olav, Edinburgh Zoo's famous king penguin, was today awarded a knighthood by the Norwegian King's Guard.
Nils Olav became a honorary member of the Norwegian Royal Guard in 1972, after a lieutenant called Nils Egelien first visited the penguins at Edinburgh Zoo.

Since that time he has received various accolades for long service and good conduct, and was last promoted to Honorary Colonel-in-Chief in 2005.

His knighthood was approved by the King of Norway, King Harald V and presented by Major General Euan Loudon, Chief Executive of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
