A £3 MILLION scheme to restore the historic heart of Brechin was launched yesterday.
The project will focus on bringing several buildings in the centre of the town back into use. They include the extension of the Brechin Town House Museum, the A-listed Merchant's House in the High Street, and some early 19th-century buildings opposit
e the museum.

The scheme is being funded by Angus Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Historic Scotland.

A spokeswoman for the local authority said: "The buildings, which will be restored by awarding grant aid to owners, are all in the centre of Brechin and are either causing blight, or are in need of repair or re-use.

"There will also be some funding for upgrading public areas such as the closes, for small repairs to the exterior of traditional buildings and for training in traditional skills."

Leslie Melville, the Provost of Angus, said it was a "momentous" scheme for the town, adding: "The launch of the townscape heritage initiative will transform some of the most important historic buildings in Brechin and Angus, and provide a boost to Brechin's regeneration and economic growth.

"Restoring and upgrading Brechin's town-centre environment will enhance greatly the town's image, which will in turn help to raise the spirits of Brechiners and attract new jobs and investment."

Colin McLean, the HLF's manager for Scotland, said: "I am sure this is the first step to a brighter future for Brechin."

Nothing to do with the fact that it's John Swinney's constituency then....................

What Brechin needs is better infrastructure, there are no trains and the bus service is appalling! There is little chance of substantial (or any) investment by companies and private individuals if there is nobody getting there!

What's Brechin for?

"Brechin , Come and get Reekin"

I'm told that there is a nice hedge up the side of Glebe Park , or whatever the football ground is called.

Anyway , I'm sure it's a fantastic place to live and grow up and realise you're not smart enough to get out of and kill yourself.

#5 Mario, it is a very pretty town with some fantastic old architecture, but badly in need of some care and investment. My mother still lives there and loves it. I really enjoy visiting, but there is so little to do, with no decent restaurants, no cinema, pathetic public transport, that it has become very much a commuter town for Aberdeen and Dundee. Sad, as it could be great.

# Donald, don't you mean Forfar?

Sorry Kate, I did actually spend some time looking at Brechin online and it has some pluspoints.

Maybe Mr Souter who was given his wealth courtesy of the Tories ON A PLATE and has donated a large SUM OF MONEY TO THE TARTAN TORIES will provide a good bus service free of charge to the GOOD people of BRECHIN. Wake up you SNP PUNKER WALLAHS. You have been conned.

Stupid west of Scotland comments like yours invite @rse-kicking replies, but I won't bother. Life's too short.

#7. Märiö Antoinette

Similar to above. If all you can do is look at some place online and make smartypants comments as you do on all these forums, then why bother? Nobody is impressed.

Brechin is a lovely town with great people, but then I'm biased. Like most small towns in Scotland it inevitably suffers from transport infrastructural problems. Politicians pay lip service but concentrate their minds and money on the larger urban centres.

#6. Kate, Switzerland

You know as well as I do that Brechin does not have the financial clout available to comparable Swiss towns. (Geneva is my second home.) Don't knock Brechin though. It has its charms.
