2 The Forest Café, George IV Bridge Top quality vegetarian grub in a cool, bohemian setting.

3 The Black Medicine Coffee Company, Nicolson Street It has the usual array of coffees and sweet treats, but this place also does a mean smoothie.

4 Clarinda's Tea Room, Canongate Brilliant breakfasts – the perfect hangover cure.

5 Kilimanjaro Coffee, Nicolson Street It has been upgraded so it's now cosy rather than cramped.
