IRAN'S attempt to launch a dummy satellite into orbit was a "dramatic failure" that fell far short of the country's assertions of success, a US official said yesterday.
"The attempted launch failed," the official said.

"The vehicle failed shortly after lift-off and in no way reached its intended position," the official said. "It could be characterised as a dramatic failure."

Iran, embroiled in a stand-off with the West over its nuclear ambitions, said on Sunday it had put a dummy satellite into orbit on a home-grown rocket for the first time, using technology that could also be used for launching weapons.

Is this the same official who's absolutely sure they will develop a nuclear weapon within a year?

Does this unnamed official also regard your article as journalism?

*** Please note, i am dyslexic, so forgive the spelling mistakes etc...***

The way the UK and the US manipulates the public who seem to want to be manipulated, is so abusive and blatantly obvious, you have to have sympathy for the poorer countries, who are trying to survive the west's quest for domination and destruction of cultures, of who do not have any resemblance of any kind to us in the west! Our ability to allow our insecurities, fears and small minds to overwhelm our sense of moral judgement, can only be a major threat to our world and the people who accommodate it, surely, we in the west are the ones who should be removed from this planet in order to save all men of all cultures of this planet... From the day made up lies to start a war which had no right to be started, was the day we lost to, already, well established terrorists all ready in place, and it looks like they are winning every day that passes... But these present war's wasn't started to fight terror, they was started so that the UK and US could justify to their perspective's parliaments and congress bodies, in order to justify the immense budgets which our governments do not want to reduce, in order to stay "king of the hill" of the world. You guy's out there have to remember that, before the Iraq war, the world was becoming more of a peaceful place to live, and because of that major problem, we in the west could not allow to reduce the arms which we hold as it would render us as to much as equals to poorer countries of our world! The day we in the west eradicate all cultures (apart from our own), we will not be able to teach our children the wonderful variety of what mankind has to offer to each other, which would make us in the west the true abuser's of gods earth...

I'm glad of this. The Iranian leader clearly is a bit of a nut & it would be bettter if he did not have the capacity to launch nuclear missiles. The same obviously applies to the US leader but unfortunately we are stuck with them.

When the Scotsman published the first report of a successful launch a coiple of days ago I questioned there decision to bury it in a 1 paragraph item. The launch not having happened is a lesser story but I think is still worth more than the 3 1/2 paragraphs here.

Iran, to the credit of the nation (as opposed to its leadership) has made huge strides in technology (see even Western press and media on its achievements in stem cell research, computer technology etc.) It is naturally concerned for its own security given the track record of the US in obliterating or invading anyone who challenges its hegemony and quest for unsatiable oil demands. It is natural to see Iran develop independently using its own initiative means to defend itself from the US and its ally in the Middle East (you know which one). Iran's current leadership is disastrous but will hopefully be voted out of office soon (yes despite Murdoch's best efforts to distort the truth Iran does hold fair elections - again see Western sources for this assertion). Iran as a nation will progress into a serious regional power despite the best efforts of the US to undermine it. It would be most refreshing if the US realised this and changed tactic by sincerely engaging it in dialogue instead of parking its carriers at its shores and threatening it with violence.

#11, may I point out that in the Shah's Persia even greater advances had been made, were being made and were planned ... nearly all of which was rendered useless when the 'mullahs' took Persia back to the seventh century and held it there against its will. Had the idiocy of the abandonment of the Shah not occurred I would venture to suggest that Persia would most likely be on a par with the likes of Spain, Norway or Canada in terms of its development. But, blinded by their hatred of the US many posting here will be unable to accept this fact.

#12 "But, blinded by their hatred of the US "

Hatred has that effect. Considering the way the Shah was put in place, I'd be pretty sore too. And the UK shares the blame along with the US. Had the idiocy of imposing the Shah not occurred, who knows what would have happened. As it was, the planned "betterment" if Iran by the UK and US (casinos, etc. remember those?), took place while the average peasant suffered. Another "fine" mess!

the shah's regime was a vile and monstrous imposition which the iranian people gladly and rightly overthrew. the real social, political and technological progress was made by mohammed mossadeq's government, which enjoyed great support. what happened to him again? oh yeah, the u.s and britain assassinated him and installed the appalling shah in his place, because mossadeq had nationalised the industries to increase the living standards of all iranians.
the u.s and britain's brutality and outright stupidity have brought us to where we are today. but what really galls is the elites in u.k and u.s don't even care, their just happy to have a bogeyman to scare the children with.

I do not understand why no one bothers to compare the Shah's regime with that of the Mullah's.
Mossadegh Democratic plans were ill planned. He took on one of the Super powers of his time - GB - and lost. I do regard him as a great man but not a seasoned politician.
The Shah's regime operated a soft dictatorship in a country where over 90% of the people were illitrate. Positive changes with prosperity - due to increase in the oil revenue - were coming fast, but the Colonial mindset did not allow it to complete. They conspired and won. Iranians were gifted with the tyrany of the Mullah's regime and it's cronies.
For the " time being " , Mullah rules OK!
But NOT forever. This is a PROMISE.
