Shi'ite leader may halt resistance - if US leave Iraq

AANTI-US Shi'ite leader Muqtada al-Sadr has ordered most of his militiamen to lay down their arms and may call off all resistance if the Americans accepted a timetable to leave Iraq.
The order from al-Sadr, who mounted two uprisings against US-led forces in 2004, was read to his followers during prayers in Shi'ite mosques across the country.
He instructed his Mahdi Army militiamen to join religious and social welfare classes as part of a new organisation – the "Momahidoun", or "those pave the way".
Al-Sadr has been moving towards a primarily political role for his militia since last August, when he declared a unilateral cease fire.
