THE First Minister has been urged to throw his weight behind a campaign to bring home the remains of a Scottish patriot who died in a foreign jail.
James Hepburn, the fourth Earl of Bothwell and husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned by the Danish king in the 16th century after fleeing Scotland after the arrest of his wife. He died, insane, after a decade chained up in a castle jail as
a political prisoner, and his body is still kept in the vault of a nearby church.

But MSPs have now joined the earl's descendants in calling for his remains to be brought back to Scotland for a proper burial.

So far, the Scottish Executive has refused pleas to help, on the grounds that the repatriation is a "private matter". But last week, Ted Brocklebank, the MSP for Mid-Scotland and Fife, urged ministers, including Jack McConnell, to bring pressure on the Danes to return Bothwell's body.

His family, led by his direct descendant Sir Alastair Buchan-Hepburn, want to bury Bothwell in the grounds of his boyhood home, Crichton Castle in East Lothian.

In a letter to McConnell, Buchan-Hepburn has asked the First Minister to approach the Danish government on the family's behalf. "My family is in full support of Bothwell's return along with others across the globe," he says.

Bothwell's mummified body is currently in the vault of Farevejle church on the Danish east coast, where it has been preserved in remarkably good condition in an atmosphere rich in sea salt. Until 1975, when the Danish royal family intervened after pleas from Bothwell supporters, it was on open display as a grisly tourist attraction.

In a parliamentary debate on Scottish heritage last week, Brocklebank said there was no justification for Bothwell's remains to be held in Denmark.

"In September, the Danish Queen Margrethe II respected the last wish of Maria Fyodorovna, widow of Tsar Alexander III, to be removed from her grave in Denmark and reburied in Russia," Brocklebank said. "Maria was a Danish national, so surely it is even more appropriate that the remains of the husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, who was himself a Scot, should be returned to his homeland."

Bothwell was a controversial character, with some historians claiming that he forced himself on the young queen before their later marriage.

Brocklebank said he had heard that Bothwell "may not be the kind of historical figure whom we wish to commemorate and that that may have contributed to the inertia of officials in trying to retrieve his remains".

"I hope that that is not the case. After extensive research, revisionist historians portray Bothwell in a far more sympathetic light, particularly when judged in a 16th century context."

He added that it was the "united desire" of Bothwell's descendants around the world that his remains should be returned to Scotland, as he wished.

Brocklebank urged ministers to contact the Danish government to press the claim for repatriation. "An appropriate last resting place for the earl would be the Crichton collegiate church in Midlothian, close by Crichton Castle, which played such an important role in the story of James Hepburn and his ill-fated queen."

The Danish government has already responded to pressure from Bothwell's descendants and supporters in Scotland, the United States and on continental Europe, by asking its church authorities to review the case for Bothwell's return. The family suspect, however, that the body will remain where it is unless the case is taken up officially by the Scottish Executive.

Whatever else he was or may have been, Bothwell remains an important figure in Scottish history. His remains should be repatriated and buried in his ancestral lands ... then forget about him if you prefer.

I agree with no. 3. He was a self seeking would be tyrant, but no more or less than the other lords of his time. He does, however, remain a an important figure in Scottish history and should be repatriated.

Unless I am mistaken - even now, when someone dies on holiday, it is the responsibility of the said persons family or estate to return the body.

Often there is a cremation to reduce the repatriation costs.

So realistically here, its whether the Hepburns wish to pay for a box or a package, as no one else would have the costs covered.

The benefit derived from his body being here is far lower than the benefot that could be derived from another use of public money.

Well said, McCrunchie; if his descendants wish to do this at their expense well done for them but certainly not at public expense; indeed, other than his descendants there would be few other Scots interested!

Maybe we should swap him for jack ,We would get more interest in a stiff.

Jackass will look at this, as a chance for another junket, before he is de throned in may.
Do you think if we ask nicely, the king of denmark will keep jack in the same room as james hepburn,
with no early release.

Edward,

What did Bothwell ever do for Scotland?
Was he a hero? No
Did he better the life of Scots in Scotland at the time prior to his demise? NO
So why on earth should the Scottish Executive get involved in this, apart from a free junket for Jacky boy McC.
Let the Buchan Heburns pay for the return of the body and dont waste tax payers money!

I feel sad when I read the vapid anti-Upper Classes and anti-Royalist posts. The comments are supposedly fuelled by 'what did they do for Scotland attitude ?'That attitude fails to understand who and what made Britain. The accusation that 'the Nobility 'is the cause of all the ills Britain faces now,is not supported by history and is not accurate.
The present cash for peerages debacle is just a repeat of what happened when Henry VIII decided to break with Rome.Vast swathes of land.Manors,Monastaries, were up for grabs and who did Henry decide to sell it to."The New Men' and who were the 'New Men?',grocers, butchers, merchants, lawyers.
William Cecil himself said 'Ancient Nobility'was nothing but 'Ancient Riches,' and he and his 'New Men" went about aquiring a bank account for the elevation to the Nobility that they despised so much:the Peerage.!
It was the "New Men' that threw the common people off the land, fenced it,and caused thousands of poor to migrate to London where they formed the slums of the Southern Banks of the Thames.
Prior to this the poor were fed by Monastries,Manor Houses and one Earl fed 2,000 people a month on his estate.
The evidence points to the "New Class of New Men", drawn from the educated classes as being the most mercenary people to rule England and Scotland, and in fact they are still doing it.Diverting the attention from accurate history under a cloak of hostility to Nobility while they line up to get their honours, and fat salaries. All at the expense of the 'Common People 'they profess to love.
As far as the Earl of Bothwell is concerned no man should be left to moulder in a foreign country.Exercise some of the compassion that I know great Scots are capable off.

alice_copeland_brown,

Fascinating: looks like our species is the same re 18/06/2008 14:55:11
Gore Vidal has said that we in the U.S. have only 1 party: the Business party with 2 branches, one that pretends to be humanitarian. 3rd Parties don't have a prayer. The corporations bribe the members of Congress with 'campaign contributions', so we no longer have a democratic republic...we have an oligarchy where the 'people' represented are the CEOs. When Rep. Kucinich, a brave man, stands up in Congress and reads out the 35 Articles of Impeachment for our Mass Murderer, who Stole the Presidency, he is given no support except from we the people. The rest are in on the conspiracy to feed us politics as usual, until the 'American Empire' moulders in the grave.

Looks like you Scots have something not quite as noxious, but similar in that most of the governing classes are asses.
