United to stop axe falling on Meadowbank
COMMUNITY councils are joining forces to oppose plans to demolish Meadowbank Stadium.
Portobello council is the third to voice its disagreement with Edinburgh City Council's plans to replace the ageing stadium with a scaled-down sports centre.
Community councillors say it is well-used by people over a wide area and that the plans will leave a gap in sports provision on the east of the city.
Robert Gatliff, community council chairman, said: "We are opposed to the loss of any sporting facilities at Meadowbank. It should be improved, not reduced."
Craigentinny/Meadowbank and Northfield/Willowbrae community councils have already called for the plan to be reviewed.
