A LANDMARK gas tower is set to be pulled down, despite a campaign to save it as a piece of local history.
Campaigners had hoped to retain the 106-year-old Granton gas tower as a memorial to the area's past.

But owners National Grid have now submitted an application to the city council requesting permission to demolish the historic tower.

The move came after a report suggested it would cost more than £7 million to keep the tower.

The distinctive blue structure was granted special protected status by Historic Scotland in 1998 to avoid the threat of it being ripped down without permission.

Despite that, National Grid has always maintained that the structure is in such a poor state that the only realistic option is for it to be demolished.

It's Grade B listed and should be retained.

So just say NO.

And the cost includes cleaning up the site which has to be done anyhow, and the rest of the claimed cost is disputable.

I came back to Edinburgh just over a couple of months ago for a visit, my god I hate all the changes that there has been to the city, this tower that the owners want to pull down, why for god sake? its a part of our history isn't it? surely it cant be in such a state that it can not be put right again, there are too many changes to the city, and to be honest, Edinburgh is losing its historic feel and look now sorry to say

The gas flats were part of our history as well. Should we have kept them?

Too much is lost because of small-minded people like those in charge of National Grid.

The sooner it goes the better. What a shocking waste of money if any is spent on keeping it there. Pay a photographer for a day's worth of picture, and then pull the thing down so that the site may be made as useful again as it once was
