A HISTORIC kirk in the Royal Mile may be sold off after plans for a long-awaited refurbishment fell through.
City council leaders are said to be considering selling the Tron Kirk, after the cost of restoring it have doubled to nearly £2.3 million.

Plans were approved last year to turn it into a new visitor attraction, with a cafe, exhibitions and performance space. But the spiralling cost of the project has left the city council with a £1 million shortfall.

The council has now ordered a new feasibility study into its future. It is understood the options include persuading a developer to carry out the refurbishment as a joint venture, agreeing a long-term lease or selling the building.

The A-listed building has been on Scotland's official "buildings at risk" register for more than four years.

The former tourist information centre had been leased by Black Hart Entertainment, but they were told to leave in October 2006.

We are willing to see £5m spent the a dilapidated monstrosity of the Granton Gas tower, but not willing to spend less than half of that on the Tron??

Get back all the "performance" bonuses paid on the Trams project and there is half of the money already.

#1 - Seems a bit mad doesn't it. If they can't find £2.3 million for a building right in the heart of touristville, then how can the councillor for Forth Ward talk of spending £5 million on a gas tower in Granton?

I think she could be whistling for the £5 million. The council is skint.

If any more of Edinburgh gets 'redeveloped' there will soon be no Edinburgh worth travelling to visit.. Used to be beautiful and should never have been considered for much of the new developments that have happened over the years.

I'm afraid the council needs to take a long hard look at itself and where it's spending our money. An awful lot of things seem to be happening that noone in the city want. It all smells a bit of back handers and certain individuals furthering their political careers.

Well, they had better make the most of it before the city population votes with their feet and their money.

Thank you just in the nick of time. Mad scientists. Universal
central command the British dept. of treachery and the Edinburgh City council
in the sky may close the crackpot project of the Granton Gas tower.
Good going on this maybe. They may wish to create a second big HISTORIC Kirk in the Royal Mile bang explosion taking much of the known universe with them.
Well done. Universal central command thanks you. Much of our
planet has been adjudicated a danger to itself and by other,
Higher Courts in our Milky Way, galaxy and elsewhere. Thanks again.
