A 72-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested following the death of an elderly woman in a Scottish village.
Ann Brown, 74, died on Wednesday night in Badnaban, Lochinver, in the Highlands.
Residents yesterday spoke of their shock at the death. One man, who lives just outside Badnaban and asked not to be named, said: "There was a huge flurry of act
ivity last night, lots of blue lights flashing through the village.
"The place was cordoned off pretty quickly and, later on, a hearse went through the village.
"Lochinver and all these wee places near it are really considered part of the same community, and everyone's very shocked.
"There are all sorts of rumours going round just now and nobody really knows the circumstances, which just makes it worse."
Locals said that Mrs Brown had lived in Badnaban with her husband, Edwin.
They said she was often seen taking walks in the area, but had been in poor health.
The Lochinver butcher, Alistair MacAskill, said: "The village is in complete shock at the news. Our thoughts go out to the family who have been left behind."
Mr MacAskill said the elderly couple had moved to the area more than 23 years ago, but they "kept themselves to themselves" and locals knew very little about them.
Sandy Johnstone, another local, said: "When they moved to the area they lived just across the road from us, but we only knew them to see and speak to on occasions."
Northern Constabulary said its inquiries were ongoing, but refused to disclose the cause of death. The man is due to appear at Tain Sheriff Court today.
