SIR Sean Connery has called on Scots to stop sniping at Homecoming Scotland and said it was more important than ever that the needs of the country are put ahead of political disagreements.
Speaking during the Dressed to Kilt celebrations in New York, the veteran actor said the Scottish media, the parliament and individuals should put their differences aside and get behind the year-long programme of events to encourage visitors to come to Scotland.

"Everyone should get behind Homecoming Scotland, regardless of their politics," he said.

"It is only for the benefit of Scotland. The people here in America really appreciate it and want to be part of it. But Scots are so unused to coming together and uniting.

"The enthusiasm is there and everyone is up for a good time. That's what we need at the moment, particularly at this moment."

Sir Sean has been a high-profile supporter of the week-long Dressed to Kilt, part of the Tartan Week celebration of Scottish culture. He and his wife, Micheline, are honorary chairmen of Dressed to Kilt.

The Homecoming advert was on STV again tonight.

What a waste of money.

Whoever was behind that decision should be sacked.

In a rare interview with Scotland's Herald newspaper, the actor - most famous for his James Bond roles - handed over evidence from his lawyers to show that, despite living in the Bahamas, he had paid more than pounds 4.6m in tax to the UK Treasury since 1997, considerably more than the majority of his critics.

In addition, his lawyers said, he had "been either personally responsible for or a major participant in a vast amount of motion picture production in the UK over that time span, which has brought literally millions and millions of pounds of capital into the country, employed hundreds if not thousands of individuals in those films and generated substantial additional tax for the UK Inland Revenue".

Sir Sean said: "Everything I've got is tax paid. I don't have any blind trusts. And I hope this erases some of the cynicism about my financial affairs."

The actor, who regularly earns millions of pounds for his film roles, said: "I pay full tax wherever I am working. That's the way it works in the film industry. Since I've gone out of my way to bring film projects to the UK, instead of Hollywood, that's meant I've paid full tax here."

10 20th Century boy, See below, also in Seans website it lists the good cause he supports and pays money into.

As for your views on Dumb and Dumber, spot on mate. But they are just a couple of bitter and twister Englishmen who yearn for the days when England ruled the seas and 3/4 of the known world. Sad thing is they can't accept it when Scotland want to go the same way as New Zealandm Canada, Australia, India, Ireland etc... Then dear old England would really be f"cked, and they know it.

#11 And of course it's true because it's on his website, untill he comes back to live in Scotland and pays the taxes he's so keen to see imposed on us he should STFU.

Sir Sean should really have a wee quiet word in Aik Salmon's lug and tell him to shut up as he has been trying to hijack the Homecoming event for the past 18 months for his own brazen political aims.

If he does that, and it works, then the rest of us might engage properly in what ought to be a cultural not a political event.

Trouble is that the ruling party in the SP is Nationalist with a capital "N" and this jamboree is to them what the 1933 Olympics were to Hitler (not that I'm drawing any point of comparison whatsoever, of course!)

The other incredible thing about this insulting drivel, is you actually believe it.

#18 The Master: Would a lower case "n" be better?

Very odd BUT yet truely fasinating, Do you dislike any of the other 25 letters Capital and/or lower case?

Eve, anyone capable of making comments like 'The Master' has made at no.18, is a lower case, very low.

As a very large market of the tourist industry is from the other parts of the UK and Ireland. I would like to know if it has been shown there yet or are we the only ones getting the advert, if so whats the point in that apart from some dort of propoganda that something is being done.

Perhaps Sean should be asking what is really being done for the industry rather then demanding we all get behind this campaign, which I for one want to succeed, but suspect that it has been hijacked by the SNP.

There are some real truths spoken there by Sir Sean!

Personally, I think the advert is not bad at all ... remembering that it is aimed at those on foreign shores!

As to its positive effects on the tourist industry ... tis toooo early yet, the frost has only just lifted at Muirfield! :smiles:

Let's be PROACTIVE and not prosaic !

Today's Vote

Is Sir Sean Connery right to criticise aspects of modern-day Edinburgh?
Yes, the city has gone downhill.
No, he’s just a grumpy old man
How would he know – he doesn’t live here.
