ST Andrew's day revellers are set to make a big splash tomorrow at some ceilidhs with a difference.
While the biggest crowds may be expected at the official celebrations in the city centre, Edinburgh Leisure is set to host the Capital's first aqua-ceilidhs.

Organisers said dancers can join in the "Splashing White Sergeant" or "Drip the Willow" at the Royal Commonwealth Pool, Drumbrae Leisure Centre and Portobello Swim Centre.

Edinburgh Leisure spokesman Michael Pinkerton said: "Drumbrae has already enlisted 40 dancers, ranging from local school children new to our national dances, right through to the rather more experienced regulars from the 60-plus aqua-fit classes."

A selection of traditional drinks and snacks will be available after the 45-minute dances, with complimentary blue or white swim caps for souvenir hunters.

For more traditional celebrations, head to Princes Street Gardens, where two purpose-built marquees will host a programme of dance, music and family fun.

In the Scottish Pavilion, Dance Base will offer workshops including Bollywood, salsa, jive and belly dancing. A second tent will feature input from the Scottish Storytelling Centre, along with face painters, colouring books and giant garden games. The Chiller Tent will provide music from the Colin Steele Quartet, featuring Cathie Rae, the Andy May Trio and DJs Barney Strachan and Aki.

Passers-by may have noticed the Greyfriars Bobby statue dressed in a dashing tartan tammy yesterday, which was today being flown to Brussels to be worn by the famous Mannekin Pis statue.

The tammy's special "Scotland in Europe" tartan was designed by Heriot-Watt University textiles and design student Nicola Moffat, 20, and forms part of an unusual challenge set by Alyn Smith MEP for people to come up with ways to celebrate Scotland's national day and links with Europe. The Edinburgh International Conference Centre will also be joining in the patriotic spirit, staging a dramatic evening performance exploring Scottish identity.

Our Scotland includes an international selection of music, dance, poetry and song, with performers from across the globe, ranging from Ghanian musicians to Chinese dancers. The performance begins at 7.30pm.

Meanwhile, Musselburgh Racecourse is to wrap itself in blue and white with a host of patriotic themes running throughout its race day. First Minister Alex Salmond will present the trophy to the winner of the feature race, the £15,000 St Andrew's Day Chase.

Saltire face painters will be available to add Braveheart-style face art and the course will be decorated in blue and white bunting, banners, flowers and flags.

Nick Fiddes, governor of the Scottish Tartans Authority, has called on Scots to show their patriotism and don a kilt to celebrate tomorrow's landmark day.

He said: "So many other countries - Ireland, America, Australia - celebrate their national day with pride. It's about time we did the same here in Scotland."

Celebrations will continue throughout the weekend with a range of activities in Princes Street Gardens.

Hurrah!

Oh, wait. It's still no a holiday.

It's great to see that, despite not the council having enough money to keep delivering miserable old pensioners shopping for them and the Scottish Government having been recently short-changed in it's budget allocation by the scheming English, Scotland knows how to have a good time.

#3 - The folk taking it as a holiday are true patriots wanting to fully celebrate our National day.

Typical Unionist, putting down everything great about Scotland, making us feel that we should be inferior in our 'wee' country.

I would be up for the 'Jig in the Gardens'.
However, it is awfully cold at present and I must deny myself this pleasure.

A True Patriot gets on with his work and continues to create proseprity, to pay taxes, to fund the thousands of workshy dopeheads who infest this 'proud' country.

It's not that long ago that Terry Wogan was about the only person in the British Isles who knew when St Andrew's day was. Perhaps as Scotland is still a Presbyterian country many are unhappy about celebrating a Saints day.

9

antifa,

After we get independence we can celebrate independence day. I'm not up for this religious nonsense.

"still a Presbyterian country" - don't be daft.

Can someone clarify the caption please ? Is it the "tartan tammy" or Nicola Moffatt herself being described as a bobby warmer ? Just thought I would ask...

11

Ghengis McCann,

Do all you professional Bravehearts get some form of allowance from King Alex the First for coming onto all of these threads every day and spouting your shortbread tin "here's tae us, wha's like us" pish every time something vaguely Scottish is mentioned?

If Scots ever actually vote for independence (as opposed to voting to dump Labour as happened in May 2007) we can have an official independence day. And all you "true patriots" can paint yourselves blue and wave your bare erses in the direction of the English border in celebration of your freeeeedom.

But until that actually happens, it would be good to be spared all the outdated tartan-waving and sporran shoogling. If you lot want to cavort in a 300-year old Brigadoon theme park, fine. But keep the noise down and don't disturb the rest of us, because here in the real modern Scotland it is actually the 21st century.

Good on Edinburgh. Time we did celebrate our Scottishness.

Wear the kilt but make sure it is made in scotland and not the tat that is going about.

We are proud to be Scottish and if we don't stand up and be counted we are going to be the minority in our own country in years to come.

It should be a public holiday!!

Cheers for being scottish and proud of it!

We can't have these Scots celebrating their own unique and ancient cultural identity now can we ?. You would have thought being an English colony for 300 yrs might suppressed those damn upstarts.

No. 18 - spot on, I fear its already being diluted.

9-Joppa Jock.

Oh if only you were right.... Scotland a Presbyterian Country indeed?!
I rented an apartment on Sauchiehall street in Glasgow for a few weeks in June as a central point for my travels to other parts of Scotland. What I saw in and around Glasgow disgusted me, fine old Scottish Churches had been turned into either furniture warehouses or furniture outlets... In great abundance, were Islamic centres and mosques....SAD, SAD, SAD...

Is Aberdeen part of Scotland, and if it is, does it qualify for the celebration too? I thought Aberdeen beach was around London somewhere. I hear it's not the best of places to play golf these days!

Today being St Andrews day in no way make me feel proud of being Scottish, I am proud of being Scottish every day I do not need any specific days to run around waving the Saltire shouting look at me I'm Scottish and proud of it.
I am not that insecure.

6 of us will be celebrating St.Andrew's Day in one of the most beautiful places in the world. 4are Scots from Edinburgh, Inverness and The Orkneys,1 is Canadian of Irish extraction and 1 is Greek,It's great that we can get together, eat ,reminisce, have a dram and sing a few songs.
I miss many things Scottish, and I am grateful for the great education I got, but I don't miss those who want to know what school you went to and if you lived in a posh neighbourhood. Nor do I miss the narrow minded Scots who were always bashing the
English and immigrants as if they were inferior.
Scots have lots to be proud of without putting others down.
Then let us pray that come it may, as come it will for a' that .that man tae man tha world o'er shall brothers be for a' that.
