David Nelson, 32, from Morningside, is about to walk 800 miles across Spain for charity.
What is your earliest memory of Edinburgh? Even as a young boy, I remember loving the smell of the Fountainbridge Brewery when the wind was blowing in the right direction – probably explains a lot!

What are your memories of school?
I had a brilliant time at George Watson's College. I've still got many friends from those days although half of them seem to be living in Australia now.

Where is your favourite place in Edinburgh and why? One of our city's seven hills, or perhaps the Pentlands. We don't realise how lucky we are. Most cities are privileged to have a few small parks.

What are the best things about Edinburgh? Edinburgh's small compared to major cities like London or New York so it has all the advantages of a small town – friendly and easy to get around – but at the same time it is world renowned and has a big city feel.

What would you change about the city? We could definitely do without the haar.

Describe a perfect Edinburgh day/night out. I'd pick a summer's day in the Festival and head out to enjoy the vibe in the city centre before taking in a few shows. The evening would see us wend our way to the Pleasance where we'd sit out under the stars and soak up the atmosphere.

Which sports interest you? Which don't? I love them all, either playing them badly or following them on the TV.

What was your most embarrassing moment? We were on a stag do at the rugby in Paris – all in our kilts. What we didn't know was that the vents in the street outside the stadium were where the air conditioning blew upwards... I'll never forget the look on about 1000 French faces when we walked over those vents.

What is your greatest achievement? This summer, I'm walking from the most northerly to the most southerly point of Spain to raise money for the disease Amyloidosis. If I complete all 800 miles in 37 days, it will be my greatest achievement. I am doing it in memory of my mother who died last year from the disease.

Sum up Edinburgh in three words. Nowhere else compares
