KATE KNIGHT, 28, is a freelance designer whose work appears on clothing, textiles and stationery. She lives in the New Town
What is your earliest memory of Edinburgh? Seeing the John Lewis toy department for the first time. My mum bought me a beautiful china doll. I still have it 25 years on.

What are your memories of school? I we
nt to King's Park Primary School in Dalkeith. All of my best memories involve two of my closest friends, Gillian and Zoë.

Where is your favourite place in Edinburgh and why? A walk along the sandy shores of Portobello Beach is great for blowing away the cobwebs.

What are the best things about Edinburgh? I love the diversity of things to do in the city and the way the centre erupts during the Festival. You feel like you can't escape the amazing buzz and energy that fills the streets and yet, if you know where to look, you can still find an amazing number of quiet picturesque spots to chill out.

What would you change about the city? I'd love to see the amount of construction work and roadworks curtailed. I am sure the trams will be all well and good in the end but the work involved in introducing them is causing an amazing amount of noise and traffic disruption.

Describe a perfect Edinburgh day/night out It would begin with a morning walk along Portobello Beach with my boyfriend before heading back into the centre of town for a light lunch at Glass and Thompson. I'd then meeting my girlfriends in the evening for a cocktail at 99 Hanover Street and, if it's been a warm day, a glass of white wine outside Malmaison on The Shore.

Which sports interest you? I really enjoy swimming and going to the gym. I don't watch much sport but I always take an interest when Scotland are playing football.

What was your most embarrassing moment? I accidentally flooded my downstairs neighbour's flat. What made things worse was the fact that it was up for sale at the time.

What is your greatest achievement? I am now doing something I love every day while working closely with a number of fantastic clients.

Sum up Edinburgh in three words Beautiful, cosmopolitan, welcoming.
