NHS to extend nicotine replacement therapy

THE number of pharmacies in Lothian offering nicotine replacement therapy to help smokers kick the habit is to more than double.
The service will now be available through an additional 53 pharmacies, following the success of the first phase of a scheme launched in late December involving 40 outlets.

The new scheme sees local pharmacies offering up to 12 weeks of one-to-one smoking support, with nicotine replacement therapy on prescription.

Fiona Moore, NHS Lothian smoking cessation co-ordinator, said: "NHS Lothian wants to make it as easy as possible for people to get support to stop smoking. We are delighted to be able to make this support available through a wider range of local pharmacies."

Nicotine replacement theropy?

What a load of old twot.

Why is it that some people believe that people only smoke because of "nicotine addiction"? By their daft logic, people would also become addicted to carrots and other root vegetables because they all contain a substance which is chemically very similar to nicotine.

People smoke for many reasons, not least because they might actually enjoy it. The "addiction" if there is one is more to do with enjoying the flavour and smell of the smoke, coupled with the physical act of smoking. If smoking was just about nicotine addiction then once you stuck one of their expensive plasters onto yourself, you would not wish to touch a cigarette ever again. that is total nonsense as even the instructions on the expensive plasters tell you.

And what about people who smoke pipes and cigars? Their intake of nicotine is minimal because they don't inhale. What keeps them smoking? The chances are it is because they enjoy it.

If you wish to stop smoking then just stop smoking. Don't buy their expensive patches or other drugs. Just stop. I'm sure that all this is really a marketing ploy to capitalise on the nazi-state regime that we live in nowadays. It appalls me that these "aids" are being subsidised or promoted in any way by the tax payer.

P.h.'s confusion about N.R. "Theropy" rather sounds like a load of "old twot", whatever that is.
Apart from rabbits and some pregnant mothers, I don't think many on this earth wake up with a compulsive desire to chew carrots, whereas many addicted smokers will reach out for their first fix after, or even before, going to the loo, unless it's, as p.h. claims, for the pure feeling of joy.
Perhaps he fears that NRT might wean him off his drug?
If pipe smokers actually enjoy puffing away on a bowl filled with reject socks, so be it.
But p.h. got one bit right. "If you wish to stop smoking then just stop smoking." O.K. addicts, no one's holding you back. On the contrary, the "Nazi" state gives you every encouragement, so what are you waiting for?

Are they putting Allan Carrs book in any of the libaries? or is there not enough money in that idea? It has a very high success rate I've read, it is a shame you do not push that before the so called "theraputic" nico products.

Mandy is welcome to propound any suggestions that wean smokers off their nicotine addiction, other than "therapeutic" solutions (note the spelling, Mandy love), tho' I'm surprised she seems to favour non-smoking literature. What's up? Does she realise the F2Sers are pushing a lost cause, hence the lack of the usual collection tin?

Please feel sorry for poor David, there is more to be pitied than scorned, our poor little junta planted, sponsored civil servant, with each and every day as he just becomes more pitiful in his responses. If he is not part of and paid for by this lunatic regime we have in power, then he is more than just simply, pitiful. A lost and lonely sick boy, regardless. David have another cup of tea and dunk another digestive, whilst you tap away your beratement of all and everyone on your well used keypad, its strange how some folk get thier 'rocks' off. Funny auld world! Some kind replacement therapy is certainly required in this poor laddies case. He should perhaps consider starting smoking, it will give him something else too do,occupy his mind, with the added bonus of occupying his hands, a win/win situation all round. All who have had to endure his many thousands of pathetic postings over the last couple of years, know this, as he constantly confirms his stupidity. Fuhrer Brown might be able to give you a transfer to another Dept, who knows you might get a job in the Ministry of something or another, as you have fully exploited this department as you have little or nothing else to add to this debate.

Nothing surprises me any more with this corrupt bunch of rogues, and small time mules for Big Pharma. They all remind me of the song, 'Money for Nothing' which is their perfect job description.

Just to remind you, the story is about nicotine replacement therapy on the NHS for people who want to stop smoking. Do you have some sort of objection to helping people who want to stop?

Always willing to help out, and I'm certainly never offended by the F2Sers, but I've missed the pleas for funds to shore up "the cause", and quotes from Abe Lincoln. Mandy's latest favourites seems to be extracts from HSE docs. Here's a free plug for her:- Go to "freedom2choose.info" It's always good for a few frivolous moments, but ignore any allusions to Judicial Reviews, as they're past history. I think the reason given was "lack of support." Oh, really?

I'd be very sorry if the internet link from Dallasland were to be severed, as his postings, like those of Petrol Man, Suffolk chas, and Carlo Rossi have always caused me many a snigger.
Just for the record,I'm not a civil servant, don't drink tea or dunk diggies, or doughnuts for that matter.
My last addiction to cigarettes was to the sweetie kind as an impressionable child, but, unlike smokers, I grew out of that addiction for the sake of my health, and my keyboard's bearing up well.
Perhaps, rather than simply berate me for my alleged stupidity and being pathetic, he could cite some examples? It's called constructive reciprocal debate.
He could always start with the KKK allusion, or didn't he like that one? He could always kick some ass if he has no better response.

I have no idea what therapy you need, not being a qualified psychiatrist, but a replacement of your ideology might be a good thing for you to consider.
Albeit that your employers expect you to spend many hours, on the internet berating people who choose to make 'choices' and decisions for themselves. Perhap! a replacement job. You, surely are employed to do this, otherwise you must be completely 'mad'.
Who in their right mind would endure such a sad life, sit'n spreading and fueling hatred, unless there was some renumerative incentive. Fuhrer Brown, just like former regimes of his type, are always able to find guys like yourself, to divide, influence bigotry, and reduce commonsense to base level. Nearing the end of the month now David, your pay check will be through soon. I certainly hope that you are being paid!!!if not that would be really, really sad, and you would have my deep heartfelt pity.

Talk about pots and kettles! I've made my choice about smoking, thank you, and am more than happy to maintain it. What choices others make matters to me not a jot, as long as they're clear of my nostrils. I have no "renumerative" incentive, just a wish to maintain the status quo, tho' would have no problems if smoking restrictions were to be extended come the 2010 review of the 2006 Health Act.
So-called "Führer" Brown doesn't employ me, so acerbic and vituperative stef's insincere concern for me is misdirected. Perhaps he should save his passion for those on whom he might be able to inflict some damage. Unlike wee stef, I feel no hatred for those on the other side of the smoking divide, just a little pity and disdain.

I am now hooked onto nicotine plasters. Nicotine is so addictive, I just can't get off them and am now using 30 per day. I don't mind though, because I'm helping those poor pharmaceutical companies to make a few bob.
