INJURED Celtic midfielders Scott Brown and Shaun Maloney were today omitted from the Scotland squad for next Saturday's friendly in Wales.

Neither player travelled with their club to Hamburg for tonight's make-or-break Europa League clash, with Brown still troubled by an ankle problem and Maloney having suffered a heel injury.

Cardiff's Ross McCormack and Birmingham's James McFadden have both been recalled after missing last month's friendly defeat in Japan through injury.

Fellow forward Kevin Kyle is also back in the squad after being unable to accept a late call-up for the Japan game due to a knee problem.

Steven Caldwell, Kenny Miller and Barry Robson also return following injury while three of the players who made their debuts in Japan have been retained – Don Cowie, Graham Dorrans and Lee Wallace.

Celtic left-back Danny Fox is included again after injury denied him a debut in Japan while Kevin Thomson, Alan Hutton and Steven Naismith fall into the same category, but Garry O'Connor and Robert Snodgrass drop out after missing the Japan trip through injury.

Charlie Adam and Ross Wallace have fallen out of the squad despite playing in Japan after being named in the original squad and there is no room for Stephen Hughes, Lee Miller and Craig Conway, who were all late call-ups for the Yokohama clash.

Darren Barr, who was named in the original squad for Japan but was the only outfield player not to get on, has been left out following the return of Burnley defender Caldwell.

Scotland manager George Burley suffered nine call-offs for the Japan friendly, while Kyle and Dundee United midfielder Scott Robertson both had to decline late invitations.

So he is keen to see his side at full strength for the November 14 game at Cardiff City's new stadium.

"We want a strong team," Burley said.

"We haven't got many games for the build-up before the Euros in September.

"Scott Brown and Shaun Maloney are missing through injury but we have got a good balance; young players who went to Japan and were involved; and experienced players back in the squad who have been injured for the past few months.

"I was very impressed with the whole squad who went to Japan. It gives me a bigger squad to choose from.

"We have got 23 there but we have another five or six who are desperate to get in the squad."

Surely its time Scotland washed there hands of any player over the age of 25 & concentrated on bringing through the "yoof".

Look at Danny Wilson's great performance last night & those the youngsters of Motherwell & Aberdeen.

Celtic also has a talented young boy from Somalia I think, whose chosen to play for Scotland.

Cut out the dead wood & lets see some shoots of recovery.

10 - Much as I'd like to see a whole new generation of young scots come through this season, I think a dose of reality has to be applied. Scotland best two players over the last few seasons - McFadden & Fletcher - are now over 25 and to dismiss them would be a serious mistake. Another thing, these kids at Motherwell are playing first team because the club is skint, nopt because they are exceptional talents. Don't get me wrong, this is a great thing for young Scottish footballers, but Ajax 96 they are not and the same goes for the young dons as well. Hopefully (and i'm being serious here) a few opf them will prove me wrong and grwo into top players but I just don't think they will. However, the present climate is the most fertile set of circumstances for young guys breaking through into senior football these days.

Regards the somali at Celtic, theres a lot of hype about him..better than Wayne Rooney if you listen to some people...but then so was John Fleck! Being only 14 I'd say that he is at the very least 3 years away from being ready for a senior international. Like Fleck, being a boy in a mans body playing against other boys in teenagers bodies he probably stands out like a sore thumb at this stage..however first team action will see him coming up against men in mens bodies..and often seasoned, wily professionals....that will certainly. like Fleck, put his gas at a peep until he learns how to deal with the step up and goes through the all round improvements required to do so.

Just curious, but who ruined a perfectly good thread on the Sevilla v Stuttgart story?

With regards to the young bhoy at Celtic, it's hardly a case of him being a young boy in a mans body. Having watched the Scotland u17's game last week he is definitely far less physically developed than many of the boys he was playing against. I agree that its best to let him develop without the extra pressure that was put on Fleck. He has a chance though.

Rb, meant with regards to other 14yrs olds that he has been playing against. However, its a long way to go from being a child protoge to big star. The names are many who haven't made it. Freddie Adu was one such star, turned out to be much ADU about nothing at the end of the day.

What did you make of him?

Scunner's Lament,

There was a guy, Kevin Kerr, who I think appeared in some U21 games. He's at Arminia Bielefeld, currently atop the second division of the Bundesliga. His disappearance from the discussion of prospective Scottish internationals reminds me of the fog that Owen Hargreaves existed in for a while ... is this guy not worth a look??
