ONE of Gordon Brown's Cabinet ministers today said the Government must admit it has made mistakes if it wants to reconnect with the public.
The warning came as an opinion poll gave Labour its worst ever rating, a massive 26 points behind the Tories. Innovation, Universities and Skills Secretary John Denham said Labour's reluctance to acknowledge failings has led to public scepticism. He
added that unless ministers acknowledged errors had been made, the public would not believe they would get it right in the future.

Meanwhile, the divide between Mr Brown and Wendy Alexander over the Scottish Labour leader's call for an early independence referendum showed no signs of healing.

The YouGov survey for the Sun newspaper put the Tories on 49 per cent with Labour on just 23 per cent, its lowest score since records began in the 1930s, and the Lib Dems on 17 per cent.

Labour's rating is even lower than the share of the vote it received in last week's local elections in England and Wales, when it lost hundreds of seats and saw Boris Johnson beat Ken Livingstone to become London mayor.

And the poll findings are bad news for Mr Brown and his party ahead of the by-election in Crewe and Nantwich on May 22, which the Conservatives hope to win.

Tory leader David Cameron fired off another letter to the Prime Minister yesterday, highlighting the inconsistencies in his comments and those of Ms Alexander on the referendum issue.

Mr Cameron said: "Either you have been completely unclear and misleading in your replies to my questions, or you have lost control of your party – or perhaps it is a combination of the two."

Ms Alexander made clear at First Minister's Questions yesterday she is determined to press ahead with her demand for the SNP to bring forward the referendum.

But Stagecoach boss Brian Souter, who gave the SNP £500,000 towards last year's election campaign, rejected Ms Alexander's claims that waiting till 2010 for a referendum meant two years of uncertainty for businesses.

He said: "I don't think there is a feeling of uncertainty around. The short and medium-term horizons are quite clear. The longer-term constitutional issue has always existed."

And John Loughton, president of the Scottish Youth Parliament and winner of Big Brother Celebrity Hijack, also appeared to criticise Ms Alexander.

He said it was the "fundamental duty" of the opposition to put forward a clear and consistent message as an alternative to the government.

"Sadly that has not happened through various changes in stance from the Labour Party."

I bet Alex is shaking in fear, the SNP will be having crisis talks, she is such a formidable opponent.

It's pretty evident that New Labour Sleaze have blown it. Their sheer arrogance and condescending attitude is mind blowing. Their time is up. There is no dignity left.

Comrade Broon's legacy will be a classic.

There is practically no difference between New Labour and the Tories, apart perhaps from the colour of their underpants.

Labour ministers apparently think the policies are OK but that we're too stupid to understand how good they are, and so what's needed is yet more spin-doctors to "communicate" with us.

Still, I'm here to help, so guys, here are some Clues:

The million quid Ecclestone gave Blair, while coincidentally getting Formula One and exemption from the tobacco advertising ban: we all know that was sleaze.

The Cash for Honours scandals: sure, you got the cops to back down, but we all know you were at it.

The quashing of the investigation into the Saudi arms deals: we all know it was sleaze on steroids and that it was moral cowardice that caused ministers to interfere.

The sundry losses of private data: not sleaze, but incompetence that's a sacking offence.

Losing count of illegal immigrants and not even noticing that they were working in the Home Office: more incompetence of the worst kind.

The Great MPs Expenses Ripoff: sleaze on stilts, and we know you're at it with Labour playing the property markets with MP offices too.

Then there's the credit bubble that Brown fomented and is likely to make us all poorer over the next coule of decades.

I'd say that if you want our votes, we'd like apologies and some remedies for the above, but it's too late. Labour were elected to clean up sleaze and instead built the most corrupt and incompetent government since the Rotten Boroughs.

"ONE of Gordon Brown's Cabinet ministers today said the Government must admit it has made mistakes if it wants to reconnect with the public."

But Why?

Do they really think we don't know how incompetent they are - it's just such a pity we have to wait so long to show them our 'View of their situation!' - as we certainly shall!

You mean in the same way that Callaghan's government re-connected before being voted out? Or in the same way that Wilson's government did the same?

The next 18 months cannot go quick enough. Goodbye Gordon!

I do wonder sometimes why these polls are peddled to us in Scotland as if they reflect opinion the same as in England? 49% for the Tories in Scotland nobody can be stupid enough to believe that would they?

I see many similarities between the times of Harold 'Gannex' Wilson, Jim 'What crisis?' Callaghan and the current shambles created by (principally) Comrade Blairista and Commissar Brown . The similarities are not pleasant. I recall the country being effectively bankrupt and being forced into the humiliating position of seeking a loan from the IMF and hope never to experience it again. Older Labouristas often like to conveniently forget the 70s but I remind them when I have the opportunity.

The biggest fear that Scottish business has today is the fear that Labour could regain power in Scotland.

If Alexander the Grate truly wants to remove uncertainty from the Scottish business community, she could start by supporting Scotland's interests instead of following Westminster directives.

The phony fight with Maggie Broon over the referendum is nothing more than a pantomime to try to paper over the incomptency of both. Maggie is trying to show that he can stand up to Scotland to placate Middle England and Wendy is trying to show that she can stand up for Scotland to try to save her job.

Unfortunately, they are both so incompetent that each time they try to stand up, the rest of us fall down laughing.

'Wendy Alexander made clear she's determined to press ahead with her demand for the SNP to bring forward the referendum' - or WHAT, exactly - She'll thcweam and thcweam and thcweam until she'th thick, maybe? Wait till she trundles out her very own Gog and Magog characters - Jackie Baillie and Karen Gillon - that'll make Ian Gray's performance on Newsnicht looks positively Statesmanlike.

What is the betting that the SNP loses seats at the next UK General Election?
Smug boy Salmond has proved himself too keen to cut services and to be the servant of the Scottish Tories to be trusted. He could be described as Annabel Goldie's "boot boy" in that respect.

In case you SNP drones haven't noticed, nobody is paying any attention to the self-serving drivel that you are posting here. Alec Salmond has peaked and had his fun. Tomorrow, it will be business as usaul. Gordon Brown must be terrified of the SNP drones posting here. For a start there are no more than six of you, times the number of personas displayed. Half of you will f@ck up the ballot paper anyway, however simple they make it for you.
Yeah, I can see Gordon Brown packing his bags at the threat you lot impose on him. Salmond will be back at his day job, in London, within two years and you lot will be a bitter, distant memory. He is only where he is because of a U-turn anyway; he does not know YOUR name, or, care for YOU one f@cking bit.

It is odds on that Salmond will lose his referendum.
That is why he does not want that referendum in the first place. Salmond is a compulsive gambler, but he wants to play with our money. His bets are hedged, he will scuttle back to England when the Scottish independence referendum is lost.
27

Bob Christie,

Surely Alex Salmond should be demanding that Broon call a UK General Election NOW, and THEN we can get on with the business of winning our independence referendum.
