FIREBRAND politician Tommy Sheridan has decided not to stand in the Glasgow East by-election.
There had been speculation the former MSP would be selected to fight the Westminster seat for the left-wing Solidarity party.
But the party announced local woman Tricia McLeish had been selected unopposed.
Last night Labour had been expected to announce their candidate but the meeting was postponed due to "unforeseen circumstances" and will now be held on Monday.
The July 24 by-election was triggered by long-serving Labour MP David Marshall's resignation on health grounds.
The Nationalists announced that local councillor John Mason, leader of the SNP group on Glasgow Council, would be contesting the seat for them.
Also yesterday Tory candidate Davena Rankin launched her campaign in the constituency.
Glaswegian Ian Robertson is the Liberal Democrat candidate, while Frances Curran is the Scottish Socialist Party candidate.
