RAY Lewis, London's deputy mayor, last night resigned amid allegations of inappropriate behaviour and financial irregularities.
Mr Lewis, who was put in charge of leading the capital's policy on youth crime, said he had stepped down in the face of an "avalanche" of allegations against him.

An independent inquiry has been launched into the allegations, which cover Mr Lewis's time as a priest in east London in the late 1990s and as head of a youth academy scheme in 2003.

It emerged he was placed under Church of England disciplinary measures between 1999 and 2005.

Mr Lewis, who was appointed following Boris Johnson's election as mayor of the UK capital on 1 May, claimed the allegations were "rubbish" and "without grounds".

Mr Johnson last night said he had "every confidence" in his deputy.

You'd think these people would be thoroughly investigated before they get these positions, wouldn't you? If you want to work with kids, or people in care, you are investigated to within an inch of your life - and rightly so!

So why can't people who want to be in these positions be fully investigated before they get the jobs??

Is it because the vast majority of politicians and would-be politicians would stand up to open and honest scrutiny??

I meant wouldn't stand up to open and honest scrutiny, of course

Lewis out after a few months, good. Clearly he is not quite the person he has made himself out to be. Damage done to Boris but no damage to London's finances.

Jasper out after 7 years, good. Clearly he is a crook. Damage done to Ken but immense damage to London's finances.

Ken is crowing that it took 7 years before Jaspar was forced to resign - Why on earth is that something to be proud of?

Boris has binned 2 colleagues who did not cut the mustard within weeks, Ken kept colleagues on for 7/8 years and throughout his tenure who did not cut the mustard.
