A SHERIFF yesterday expressed his sympathy for a 62-year-old man who grew his own cannabis to alleviate chronic back pain.
Sheriff Derek Pyle told Alexander Mearns: "The court and prosecution authorities, and the police, have to enforce the law as it stands, not as what some think it ought to be, I am afraid. I have considerable sympathy for you."

Inverness Sheriff Court was told Mearns had twice battled cancer, survived a heart attack, had diabetes, suffered chronic back pain and had a twisted spine.

Mearns, of Inverness, was found to be producing cannabis at his home on 13 January.

Police officers found six plants growing and a further ten small cuttings.

The retired post office worker admitted two charges of producing cannabis and possessing the drug.

Sheriff Pyle fined him £300 for producing the drug, and admonished him on the charge of possession.

Obviously the police are picking easy targets again. Why don't they try and catch genuine drug dealers; especially those that deal in the more dangerous drugs?

I sometimes wonder why there are so few major drug dealers and importers caught by the police. Not that I'm implying that there are too many bent pigs.

It must be very safe to live in Inverness. Otherwise the police would have more important crimes to solve than an invalid making his own medicine.

Still, a medicine bust for an invalid gives them the same number of points as catching a mugger (or a rapist).

The cops in this country have their priorities all wrong. These sorts of cases make them look stupid.

Didn't god say "all the plants" were for mans use, (or something like that) Just who do these lawmakers think they are? That they can overrule god, has Beth got nothing to say about this blatant disrespect for "gods" word?
