Scotland's last witch: Fraud or innocent victim of witch hunt?

Published Date: 03 March 2008
TO HER supporters she was a hard-working housewife and mother whose ability to communicate with the spiritual world saw her persecuted and wrongly imprisoned.
But now a Scottish peer has branded Helen Duncan – known as Scotland's last witch – a fraudster, who should not be given the pardon campaigners are seeking.

Ms Duncan, born in Callander, was jailed for nine months after being found guilty under
the 1735 Witchcraft Act in 1944. She claimed that, at a seance in Portsmouth, a dead sailor told her of the sinking of the battleship HMS Barham. The information had not yet been released by the war office.

Her supporters lodged a petition with the Scottish Parliament last week, and are hoping she will be pardoned. An appeal to Westminster failed last year.

However, Lord Moncreiff of Kinross has called for the petition to be rejected, claiming figures that show she made £112 – worth almost £3,000 today – in less than a week prove she preyed on the vulnerable.

"I have to question why she made so much money from bereaved relatives," he said. "The ethics of that ring alarm bells."

Neither was she "branded a witch" by the court, he said, but was instead tried for earning money through fraudulent means.

"If the parliament accept this petition, they must also accept that Helen Duncan was genuinely able to communicate with the spirit world," he added. "That would be a great step back."

However, Ms Duncan's family say she was targeted because she revealed sensitive war secrets.

Ewan Irvine, a medium from Full Moon Investigations, which lodged the petition, disputes Lord Moncreiff's claims.

"She was an elderly Scottish housewife who made use of her extraordinary gifts," he said.

"I'm hopeful that the parliament will recognise that but if they don't we won't give up."

How about an apology from the Kirk and State for the atrocities committed during the witch-hunting era. And perhaps some compensation for those of us who had ancestors put on trial for witchcraft ?

O ye of little faith #3!

I have a message for you. I feel a presence from the other side. The presence is a woman. A woman with a vowel in her name. Does that mean anything to you? Does it?

She says you will be happy this year and says yes, spend your money the way you want to. Does that mean anything to you? Does it?

Oh, the presence is fading. Let me know if all this comes true!

Sadly, attacks on alleged "witches" appear in world news source with some regularity.

Last week, several newspapers reported that a 7-month pregnant woman in Papua New Guinea, who was hung from a tree after being accused of sorcery, gave birth to her baby while struggling to free herself.

Nolan Yekum and her husband Paul were dragged from their house by fellow villagers who accused them of sorcery after the couple's neighbour suddenly died.

Currently, the CBS News video service carries a feature on women accused of witchcraft in Ghana, who are either killed or run out of villages, while their only real crime is that they are old or widowed.

helen was tried for fraud, she was not tried as a witch, ergo the petition is useless because it is basing itself on a wrongful assumption. If anyone signs this they are an idiot because they do not realise what it is they are even signing. Helen duncan was indeed a fraud, there is plenty of evidence and documentation to prove this if anyone cares to spend five minutes looking for it.

I would like to commend Lord Moncreiff of Kinross for saying what so many of us are thinking.

Helen Duncan was a fraud, no doubt, you only need to see the ridiculous photos of "Peggy".

How anyone can look at the pictures of her with cheese cloth draped on her and think that is some kind of magical super material is beyond me.

I know that back in those days people were gullible, people didnt know any better, but it is 2008 and people still think that nonsense is real.

Seriously folks, the woman was a fraud how obvious does it need to be.

Neither. They thought she was spying but couldn't prove it. Actually I suppose if she wasn't then she did get the information from the spirit world & was indeed guilty - I doubt that.

It's about time someone in the public eye started treating these charlattans with the contempt they deserve.
Astrologers, witches,Uri Geller, mediums (media?!)etc. should not be allowed to practise their chicanery in a modern state and I await the day when one of them is taken into a court of law and forced to demonstrate or explain their "powers" to the non-credulous and non-superstitious.
And special measures for Erich von Danniken and his protaganists.

This Jon Donnis (above) appears to run the Bad Psychics website. So, in actual fact, he was promoting his own site in the above post.

It appears he seems to think psychics are media seekers, when in actual fact, he seems to be trying to do the same for himself by slagging people off and hoping he gets recognition for it.

Plus it woudl appear that Helen Duncan was Scottish born and bred and hence why folk in Scotland are campaigning for her. This idiot Jon stays south of the border - do i need to say more.
