I think it should have gone to the best central defender in the Scottish game at the moment : Gary Caldwell.
He's been playing like a lion for Celtic since about March/April and he's very vocal in encouraging his team-mates and keeping everyone on their toes.
He's mentally strong having come through some difficult spells at CP, especially when he had to fill in at right back and his unforgettable error against Barca.
It's not easy to come through that level of criticism from your own fans and respond by becoming one of the best players in the team. You need to have a lot of self-belief and determination to turn things around the way he has.
For me, Caldwell has the winning mentality , the aggression and the personality to be a great captain...in fact, I think he'd do a better job of it than McManus.
Fletcher seems quiet and too obsessed with his own performance to mark him out as a skipper. He's a creative player, and is best left to just get on with his job.
Caldwell has a good number of years left in him, and I think he is now ready to step up to the plate as a captain.
People have spoken a lot about Boruc and McGeady being window shopped, but actually, if Caldwell can keep sustain this form over the season, it is he more than any other Celtic player that I would expect to see becoming the sunbject of a transfer bid.

Fletcher has already been national captain; he was vice captain until that post was given to Steven McManus by George Burley so he is probably the obvious choice with Barry Ferguson and McManus both missing. I suspect that when one or both of those players are in the team Fletcher will revert to being 3rd choice captain. Provided we win, I dont mind who captains the team - they could play with no captain or 11 for all that. The result will be the important thing.
Why does the Scotsman have an article detailing the full Scotland 22 but no corresponding breakdown of the Norway squad? Is this lazy journalism or are we putting our heads in the sand and assuming that we will win? Could be dangerous! Norway are no mugs and Scotland shouldn't forget the recent away defeat to Macedonia, a team with a previous record of upsets.
Incidentally, before anyone else corrects it, Darren Fletcher is not Scotland's youngest ever captain. That honour goes to one John Lambie who was just over 17 when he captained the national side in about 1886. Sorry - must have been hanging next to Crampsey's Coat for too long.

So we have the scottish phil neville as captain- not too sure about this one!
Scotland have suffered some woeful result while he has been on the park (belarus, georgia, macedonia etc) the reason for the defeats was the midfield were non-existent. If he were a leader he would have been more vocal or actually put in a shift. He can be far too annoymous for my liking.
As for Caldwell the guy is a eight car pile up waiting to happen. He is rank rotten in the spl week in week out. As witnessed in the dundee utd game earlier in the season (where the ref protected him) and again on saturday the guy can't be trusted to tackle an opponent in the box. Caldwell jumps with his hands above his head, it the ball strikes his hand its a penalty (except in the spl where its a free kick to sellic).
Davie Weir should have been given the captaincy as he is the only player in the squad who you could actually call a leader.

Fletcher may not have produced his best form yet in a Scotland jersey but he is proud of the jersey and has a club manager that support his national ambitions. Weir should consider himself fortunate to be in the team after he spat the dummy out at Bertie Vogts.
He decided not to return to play for his country until his old Everton Gaffer came calling.
Fletcher is now regularly in the Man U starting 11 and merits his place in the team. Why not as captain? No other obvious candidates.

Darren Fletcher has never had the misfortune of being singularly to blam for one of his countries poorest ever international results
That honour fell on Weir for his abject performance against the Faroe Isles in a 2-2 draw.
So shocking was his performance, that the normally amiable Bertie Vogts tore into the centre half.
Like a true pro, Davie Weir took the feedback in the changing room, then immediately savaged the manager through the media declaring that he would never again play for Scotland.

There is definatley unrest in the camp and a few of the players arent happy with burley or his way of doing things.
45, bazza is a tube, who always seemed to pull out of national games if there was a more important OF game on the horizon. He does nothing for the squad and we have better younger players to chose from now. BUT as is the way with OF players he will probably walk straight back into the next squad regardless as to wether he is playing regularly or not.

I cannot believe people are comparing George Burley to Vogts this early into the world cup qualifying campaign. I for one find George's tactics refreshing with more emphasis on attacking, passing football which is a joy to watch instead of the boring, defensive style of some previous managers. George is a great motivator and wouldn't underestimate the effect of his decision to make Fletcher captain. I would find a place in the team for Maloney. I would always play Boyd when we play with two strikers and will always score goals. Unfortunately his lack of games for Rangers may ultimately cost Scotland in sharpness. C'mon Scotland!

He had a chance at Blackburn, couldn`t hack it and came back home.
A lot of current mediocre players are getting into the hall of fame.
Scotland will achieve the same success in this group regardless of whether he plays or not. He will not be missed.

Are you really 42 years of age ?
I would have bet you were no older than 22.
Reminds me of the old saying...."One is only young once but one can be immature forever"

Yet again a knuckle dragger has to come into a post about football and lower it to comments regarding bigotry and other such cack.
But being a supporter of a 2nd best team as is his name, it doesnt take much to guess it also counts for his IQ
Away you go and infest your own threads with your bigotry, leqave the reak football for true supporters to comment on.
As for Fletcher , a good choice in captain, far better than the wee thug who couldnt hack it in the real games down south

179 - It's also in the BBC website...this quite shoite coveruop actually...I wouldnt want the agents of this cover up to be covering up anything concerned with me. Pretty incompetent cover up merchants - its all over the national press. I don't think Neil Lennon should be paying them the second instalment of their cover up wages!
Second arrest after Lennon attack
The alleged assault took place hours after Celtic's game against Rangers
A second man has been arrested in connection with an alleged assault on Celtic coach Neil Lennon in Glasgow.
The 43-year-old was being detained in police custody and expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Tuesday.
David Whitelaw, 46, appeared in court last month charged with assault to severe injury. He made no plea or declaration and was kept in custody.
Lennon, 37, was treated for minor injuries following an incident in Ashton Lane on 1 September.
The incident happened hours after Lennon was in the Celtic dugout for the club's 4-2 home defeat to Rangers.
