ITALY'S cabinet yesterday issued a year-long state-of-emergency ruling for Pompeii just hours after the scale of neglect at the site was revealed in a damning newspaper report.
It blamed the state of decay at the ancient Roman town, buried by nearby volcano Vesuvius in AD79, on mismanagement and poor investment.

This is truly shocking.

Pompeii and Herculaneum are World Heritage Sites and should not have been allowed to degenerate into this state of neglect.

Typical of the Italian (non)-government under Berlusconni that cannot do ANYTHING correctly.

The last eruption was in 1945 - since then Vesuvius has been blocked by a magma plug. There are about 5 million people living in the Naples area not much further from the volcano than Pompeii.

Preservation of this site should be a matter of urgency.

Is there no chance that in these turbulent times it has been decided to spend money on those alive at the moment and not some pots and bricks from 2000 years ago?
I'm sure the site has been filmed, photographed and catalogued extensively over the years.

It is true. When I went there the place was a complete ruin, none of the shops or famous brothels were open for business which is the only reason I went there. If you really want to see some run down dump full of odd foreign people and junkie locals who revel in every vice, a place which lacks investment, has no future and which has been betrayed by every Labour politician tha thas ever represented it then wait till you can get the tram to Leith.

He sometimes knows not what he says - Dougie from Bathgate that is. Is there something in the water there that makes people make such inappropriate comments?
